Patch 1 (0.23.0): A New Opening, Rebalanced Economy and Many Fixes

On Steam

Patch 1 for The Drowned Table brings a new opening, a new enchantment, a rebalanced economy, a darker and calmer cabin, and a long list of fixes.

Version: 0.23.0 (Patch 1)

New

  • Shuffle is a new enchantment: the die is cast 2 more times where it lies, and the highest face is kept.
  • Every market now stocks at least one die that is already enchanted.
  • Enchanted dice show a glowing hologram glyph above them while they rest on the table.
  • Six whispers now play at haunted moments. Settings has a new Whispers volume slider under Effects.
  • The cabin has new ambient sound: creaks, groans, thuds and thunder, stronger the deeper you go.
  • Two candles now burn on the cabin walls beside the lantern.
  • At depth 1, rain beads form on the porthole glass and run down it.
  • Below the surface the ship jolts. The lantern swings harder and the table frame shakes a pixel or two. This is off with Reduced Motion or Screen shake off.
  • The crab on the title screen now walks and climbs around the painting in 3D.
  • A Reveal all button on the reward window turns over every covered card at once.
  • A new Show tips switch in Settings turns table tips and first-run prompts on or off.
  • The first time a presence or a bounty appears, a one-time tip explains it.
  • Shift+R opens the Start a new descent prompt. Holding R rerolls the seed in the same cup without ending the run as lost.
  • Settings Display now has V-sync, a frame limit of 30, 60 or none, and a Brightness setting from 80 to 120.
  • The Lexicon has new entries for Salt Lien, Torn Tentacle, Caught in the Silt, Deadwater Blight, Sea Chart, Keepsakes and Daily Tide.

Opening

  • A new opening cinematic plays when you start a new descent, in place of the old introduction. You can skip it.
  • Replay the introduction (Settings > Audio) now plays the new opening.
  • Settings has two new options: Opening and Opening captions.
  • The opening is fully narrated, with sound for the storm, the sea, the ship's timbers, the door and the walk to the table. The narration is a temporary voice for now.
  • Captions stay on screen longer, with real silences between lines. The full opening runs about 99 seconds.
  • Captions now fit 4:3, 3:2 and ultra-wide windows.
  • The break through the surface is slower, its scene changes dissolve for longer, and the sea now blends softly where the water meets the sky. This is easier on the eyes, especially for photosensitive players.
  • Lightning in the opening is now four soft glows in the sky, at least 8 seconds apart. It follows the Screen flashes setting.
  • The injured walk is slower, and the door swings open about its hinge.
  • The opening ends in the cabin, looking down at the table where the title is written in ink.
  • The opening no longer plays stand-in sound effects, only its finished sounds.
  • New Captains hear The First Page before the starter cache opens. The cache comes after the intro, also after Skip introduction.
  • The first starter cache carries one line explaining it.
  • The depth story shows "Depth N, page X of Y", with a smaller Skip story button and no Doubloon count.
  • The intro has a larger Continue button and a smaller Skip introduction button. It keeps its page count on screen between passages.
  • The depth epigraphs no longer give play instructions. They now read as atmosphere.

Balance

  • A doubled win now multiplies its Doubloon bonuses by x2.0 at depth 1, easing down to x1.7 at the deeper depths.
  • Winning a fight with risk skulls pays 1 extra Doubloon for each skull after the first.
  • Winning a Formidable fight pays 2 extra Doubloons.
  • Beating a guardian pays 3 extra Doubloons.
  • Beating a guardian also lets you pick 1 of 3 Curios from the guardian's hoard: Uncommon at depths 1 to 3, Rare from depth 4.
  • The first guardian you meet at depth 1 is always one of the three gentlest.
  • Shop prices for dice and caches rise by 10 percent for each depth.
  • Restocking costs depth minus 1 more Doubloons, on every restock including the first.
  • Paid events cost 0.9 times what they give, and the price shown is the price you pay.
  • The guardian that charged a Doubloon before every cast no longer does, and its 0.8 score penalty is gone.
  • Every guardian now marks a face before each cast. Each die that lands on it costs its face value in Doubloons. Anything you cannot pay comes off that die's points.
  • A guardian's target grows from overkill only when you score more than 3 times the target.
  • A Fragile die now breaks 1 time in 4 when cast.
  • A pre-enchanted die in the market costs a surcharge by rarity: Common +3, Uncommon +6, Rare +9, Epic +12, Legendary +15.

Changes

  • The cabin lantern swings on a steady 6 second cycle.
  • The lantern lights less of the cabin, the room is darker at depth, and lightning is a slow glow that never flashes.
  • The Hunger badge has a maw icon and larger text, and stops short of the lantern.
  • The reward window is built once, so turning over a card no longer redraws it.
  • Reward cards show a Faces line and larger die art.
  • Dice whose partners you do not own no longer show the generic "Look for supporting powers" line.
  • The fight-won actions sit in a 2 by 2 grid, and Captain's Logs fits on one page at 1280 wide.
  • The ledger panel at the bottom left of the fight screen is shorter.
  • The Sea Chart shows destination cards at one fixed height, with lane names that fit their lanes.
  • The Sea Chart skull legend lists the extra Doubloons for 2 and 3 skulls and for Formidable fights.
  • The win breakdown lists Skull, Formidable and Guardian pay. A doubled win reads "Bonuses N, raised to M" from depth 2.
  • A guardian fight shows "Marked face: N" above the cast, and the cast log shows how much was paid.
  • The Restock button has a tooltip: "Each restock in this visit costs more, and deeper Markets charge more."
  • Abyss-Touched Curios read "Abyss-Touched: doubles its effects." on the market card.
  • The Ritual upgrade button, its tooltip and the shop card now describe the same gain.
  • Settings tabs stay visible on every page.
  • The version number shows only on the title screen and in Settings.
  • After you choose Vanish, the title offers New descent instead of Continue.
  • The Reliquary opens on a tab with something you can use, shows a short note under each tab, and calls its Extras tab Perks.
  • Daily Tide rules show three short lines, with the details behind a ? button.
  • The Daily Tide twists Salted Wounds and Thin Purse are renamed Hard Targets and Lean Purse.
  • Leaving an unfinished Daily Tide warns that it uses today's attempt.
  • The practice table starts empty and tells you why when it cannot add or cast.
  • Cup cards say how hard their targets are, and when they ease or climb.
  • Captain's Logs no longer shows Delete profile on a profile with no run and no progress.
  • How to play and Settings show the same controls list.
  • The Lexicon list is wide enough to show full entry names, and the scoring sequence is numbered.
  • Boot, loading and cinematics keep running when the window is not focused.
  • Seven new event music tracks set the mood in lost, haunted, forest and abandoned places. The Credits list every track's artist and licence.
  • Rules and screens say "fight", "this fight" and "next fight" instead of "offering". The fight banner reads "Choose up to N dice, then Cast."
  • Multiplier is written the same way everywhere in event, dice, Curio and Lexicon text.
  • Madness text says what raises it, and the preview says "one die is swallowed".
  • Hunger and Bounty goal lines, the Ward offer, and several stored-dice cards are reworded in plainer words. The Ward offer shows "Wards held: N of 3".
  • The word "adopted" is replaced in curse text with "carried" or "taken", and the Sea Chart curse label says "TAKE".
  • The fight-won screen reads "Scored X. Target Y.", and the push window reads "TARGET REACHED. Scored X."
  • The Endless button reads "Continue into Endless", with one line explaining it.
  • The score plaque chip reads "This cast +N" instead of "Temp +N".
  • Event choice labels are tidied, and five events that had no tag line now have one.
  • Curio, Keepsake, Reliquary and Fathom VI text is cleaned up and uses plain wording.
  • Wild Bone and Wild Spore are renamed Odd Bone and Odd Spore. The Coral Crown Curio is renamed Coral Circlet.
  • Davy Jones's curse titles and item names use the same apostrophe everywhere.
  • The Fill cup button has a tooltip: "Selects your highest-face dice. It ignores dice powers. It replaces your selection."
  • The Choose a different cup button on the first-run prompt has a tooltip.
  • The Lexicon is cleaned up: older-voyage sentences are removed, and Verdant is called an enchantment.
  • The Sea Chart header hint ends "Events and markets cost no fight", and a Formidable fight's reward reads "AN UNCOMMON OR RARE DIE".
  • The feedback page says Submit sends your message to the developer, and no email address is shown.

Fixes

  • The green table no longer shows on a cold start.
  • The first lightning strike in a storm no longer freezes the game for several seconds.
  • Mnemonic Vault now saves a whole number of points instead of a half point.
  • The market no longer puts two identical Dice Caches on the shelf.
  • Brightness 80 and 120 no longer draw a white screen.
  • The dice cup now stands on its coaster in every window shape.
  • Tray dice icons now draw correctly after a cast returns.
  • Achievement banners fit their text and wait until a window closes.
  • Fight labels fit their text instead of being cut off.
  • An event's first line is on screen as soon as the event opens.
  • The market's inspect hint no longer opens a tooltip over the Buy button.
  • The depth quote and the presence line no longer run over the Hunger and Bounty badge.
  • Event choices and tag lines no longer hang off the screen at the largest Text size.
  • The score summary's caption and detail line fit their text and no longer sit off the bottom of the screen.
  • Sea Chart cards and the header hint no longer cut their text with an ellipsis, and no two captions touch at any Text size.
  • A sky glow no longer stays lit when two glows come close together. It now fades away.
  • The long fight-screen rule text for a temporary passage rule now shows in full without moving the panel.

Accessibility & comfort

  • Screen flashes is now a three-way setting (Off, Reduced, On) and defaults to Reduced for new profiles.
  • Gameplay flashes are limited to one a second, and every light and glow rises as a swell.
  • The dice cup shakes more slowly and its lit side dims while it shakes, so it no longer flickers against the dark felt.
  • Dice-hit lights, ritual lights and sky glows follow the Screen flashes setting.
  • Reduced Motion, Show the cup and hands, and the overhead board view are now three separate settings.
  • With Reduced Motion on, the lantern eases to a stop instead of snapping.
  • The Narrate story toggle is 44 px tall everywhere.
  • Dice number keys 1 to 8 now work on any keyboard layout.
  • Table tips all appear in one fixed spot.

Known issues

  • The second lightning strike in a storm can hitch briefly the first time it plays after launching the game. A fix is coming in the next hotfix.
  • Starting a new descent can pause for under a second on the first run after launching. A fix is planned.

*The free demo will get these Patch 1 changes in an upcoming hotfix, expected next week.*
