Frozen to the Bone - Cold Survival Update

On Steam

Cold Survival System Begins

Hello Survivors,

This update removes the Halloween Event and introduces the first stage of a major survival system overhaul: the effects of cold weather on your character.

Frozen to the Bone

We're gradually introducing temperature-based survival mechanics.

Nesoi Island is not yet experiencing extreme winter conditions, but temperatures can already drop low enough to cause serious cold exposure and eventually lead to Hypothermia.

Hypothermia is dangerous. It increases fatigue, raises water and calorie consumption, and can limit your ability to survive other injuries and environmental threats.

Hypothermia

Even during light snowfall, temperatures can occasionally fall below 0°C (32°F).

During regular snowstorms and blizzards, temperatures may drop below -20°C (-4°F).

Your clothing may no longer provide sufficient protection against the cold. You can monitor your thermal protection directly on the HUD:

  • PROTECTED - your insulation is sufficient.

  • -INSULATION - your thermal protection is too low.

Hypothermia Warning

Once Hypothermia reaches a noticeable level, a warning will appear in the standard injury notification area.

Severe Hypothermia becomes life-threatening. At higher stages, your character will experience pain, and health loss can become a serious risk when combined with other injuries or survival factors.

Rare Weather Events

Snowfall and dangerously low temperatures are currently uncommon and will not occur during the first days of a new game on Nesoi Island.

Early Version - Feedback Wanted

This is the first iteration of the cold survival system.

Right now, I'm building the foundation and would love to hear your feedback. Temperature balance, insulation values, and overall survival impact will continue to be adjusted and improved over time.

In a future update, the opposite extreme will also arrive: Overheating..

Protection Against Hypothermia

Surviving the cold is not only about wearing the right gear. If you start suffering from Hypothermia, there are several ways to recover.

  • Every Shelter provides enough warmth to gradually remove Hypothermia. Recovery takes some time, but it is relatively fast.

  • You can also warm yourself near burning barrels and lava fields. Be careful, though. Getting too close may result in burns.

  • Some armor attachments provide additional thermal insulation, especially gloves and warm boots. You can check your total insulation value in the OPERATOR → THERM tab. The basic EVA Suit and helmet provide only 11°C of thermal insulation.

Emergency Solutions

  • The BODY WARMER is an emergency item that can instantly remove roughly 30% of your Hypothermia. It may be worth stockpiling a few before winter weather catches you by surprise.

Additional Improvements

Footprints in the snow have returned to Nesoi Island. Both you and your enemies now leave visible tracks, making snowy conditions feel more immersive and alive.

Enemy clothing is also now affected by snowfall and gradually becomes covered in snow.

Dynamic Heat Sources

Burning barrels now generate heat once they reach a sufficient temperature, creating a warm zone around them and melting nearby snow.

Lava fields work in a similar way, providing natural sources of warmth and safety during cold weather.

This update lays the groundwork for much deeper temperature and survival mechanics planned for future releases. As always, your feedback is greatly appreciated and will help shape the system moving forward.

Save Games

Although this update introduces new survival mechanics, the save game version has not been changed, so you can continue playing using existing saves.

However, for the most accurate gameplay experience, I recommend starting a new game from this update onward. While all Halloween Event content has been disabled, some event-related objects may still appear if they were already stored in an older save.

A new save game version update is planned in the near future, so this may be a good time to begin a fresh playthrough and experience the new survival systems as intended.

Stay warm and stay alive,
Paweł
