Starjump 1.1.0 - Survival Update

On Steam

Everything since 1.0.35: clean water, farming, real tools, first aid, storms, boats, livestock and ruins to search, on top of the workshop, clean energy, deep caves and a brand new character.

Water you can drink, or not

  • River and lake water carries germs: every sip has a one in five chance of making you sick. Sick, you lose water and food faster and your body stops healing.
  • Seawater makes you thirstier: the salt asks your kidneys for more water than it gives.
  • Fill glass bottles, then boil the water on a campfire or a fireplace, or pour it through a slow sand filter (gravel, sand and charcoal, like in villages without tap water).
  • Boiled seawater leaves salt behind.

Farming

  • Till grass or dirt with a hoe, then sow wheat grain, seed potatoes or corn kernels.
  • Crops grow with real warmth: every degree above their base temperature counts. Fresh water nearby or a recent rain makes them grow faster. Frost kills potatoes and corn, winter wheat holds.
  • Fields keep growing while you are away.
  • Grind grain into flour with a hand quern, bake bread, potatoes and corn at the fire.

Livestock

  • Feed a sheep grain three times and it is tame: it no longer runs away and it stays. A fence makes a pen.
  • Shear it with shears for raw wool (it grows back), milk it into a bottle, make cheese with milk and salt.
  • Your herd is saved with your world.

Real tools

  • Pickaxe, shovel and saw, in bronze, iron or steel. The right tool digs faster, the better metal faster still and lasts longer. Rock by hand is very slow.
  • Tin ore (cassiterite): nine copper and one tin make ten bronze, the real recipe. Steel is iron and carbon.

First aid

  • A deep bite bleeds until you stop it with a bandage or yarrow leaves, the herb Achilles put on wounds.
  • A big fall breaks your leg: you limp for two days. A splint makes the bone heal four times faster.
  • Snakes leave venom glands: make antivenom. It cures venom, not food poisoning.
  • Under water you have thirty seconds of air.

Keeping food

  • Cold slows rot and heat speeds it up: food in a cold cellar keeps three times longer.
  • Salt fish and meat, smoke them in a smokehouse over a fire, or dry them on a rack in the sun into jerky and stockfish.

Storms and fire

  • Thunderstorms come with heavy clouds and warm air. Lightning strikes the highest point around and sets fire to what burns.
  • Fire spreads through wood, leaves and grass, and rain puts it out. A copper lightning rod catches every strike near it.
  • Thunder comes late, at the speed of sound: count the seconds to know how far it struck.

Explore

  • Ruins of old houses with chests, and crashed probe wrecks with supply crates, all over the Earth. Break them open to search them.
  • Rafts and rowboats: launch them on water, row where you look, beach them back into your bag. Other players see you row.
  • A compass made from magnetite, the natural magnet. On Mars and the Moon the needle just spins: they have no magnetic field.
  • A map that draws itself as you walk.

Water wheels and windmills

  • A water wheel in a stream or a farm windmill in the wind turns the quern's stones up to four times faster: the energy that ground grain for two thousand years.

The workshop

  • Furnace (temperature matters: a wood fire melts copper, iron needs coal), fabricator with a conveyor belt, recycler and textile mill.
  • Bamboo and fabric backpacks, tools that wear out, coal, ingots, cotton, PET and fabric.

Clean energy

  • Solar panels, small and large wind turbines, lead-acid and lithium batteries. The grid uses the sun and the wind first, then the batteries, then the gas generator.
  • Shared weather: every player sees the same clouds, rain and wind.
  • A flashlight and a headlamp running on real 18650 cells.

Building

  • Six roofing materials in every shape: slopes, half slopes, ridges, hips and valleys. Gutters and roof windows.
  • Fieldstone, ashlar, cinder block, siding, half-timbering, tiles and log walls; garden walls, fences, a gate, glass panes and railings that join their neighbours by themselves; slabs and stairs that turn their corners.

Deeper worlds

  • The world goes 256 blocks down. Caves on four levels, flooded below the water table; lava tubes on the Moon and Mars, karst on Pangea, ice caves on Yule.
  • Taller mountains, real oceans, rivers that run down to the sea, lakes at any altitude.
  • Underground it is dark: daylight never goes through rock, lamps light the night.
  • New ores: quartz, bauxite, galena, spodumene, tin ore and magnetite.

Wildlife

  • Every mammal rebuilt on a real anatomy, with real speeds. Predators hunt like real ones, prey tire, packs circle, bears bluff charge. Young animals, hibernation, migrating swallows.

Your character

  • A new body with 17 jointed parts, real 3D skins, custom skin.png and an in-game skin editor.
  • Head and eyes slots: cap, beanie, hard hat, headlamp, sunglasses.
  • Body temperature: cold slowly chills you, and below 35 °C you are in hypothermia.
  • F1: from behind, from the front, then your eyes.

Interface and multiplayer

  • Five languages, a new creative inventory, every key can be changed, Ctrl+V pastes into the chat.
  • Fishing with a real reel, cooking at the fire.
  • Everything is checked by the server: water, crops, tools, wounds, boats and herds. Server modpacks and plugins, ride in a friend's ship.

Crash landing

  • You now wake up next to the wreck of your shuttle, its nose buried in the ground. It will never fly again: only an empty fuel tank, a fabricator and a generator survived. The rest is crumpled sheet metal you can saw back into aluminium, iron and copper.
  • When you die, a death screen lets you choose: respawn or back to the menu. Nothing moves you before you choose.
  • Dropped items stay on the ground, even after a server restart. Server owners can set DropItemsDisappearTime in server.properties.
  • Q throws an item for real: it lands where you threw it.
  • Leaves no longer give an edible block that looked like wood.
  • Ores only break with a pickaxe: by hand they give nothing, like real rock.
  • Rock no longer breaks by hand either, just like real rock: you need a pickaxe or the new cordless rotary hammer.
  • You start with a cordless rotary hammer, half charged. It cuts rock but never ore. Empty, recharge it on a house battery.
  • The stick is now a real 3D item. Old sticks in bags and on the ground become the new one.
  • A tree that falls against another tree can now be chopped up to the last log.

Swimming, flying and moving

  • You float like a real body: lungs full, eyes just above the surface. Swim where you look: look down to dive, look up to come back up. Crouch to sink.
  • Front crawl at the surface, breaststroke under water, treading water when you stop. Under water the view turns green or blue and fades.
  • Creative flight lying flat, one fist forward, and upright when you hover.
  • Your whole body moves for real: knees, elbows, shoulders and hips. Long falls, hard landings, a limp with a broken leg, hands on the oars.
  • Your backpack and tools stay on your body whatever you do.
  • Rivers and lakes now have clear fresh water.
  • Staff capes shimmer with a gold light running along their edges.

Menus

  • Every save is listed, with scrolling. Older worlds are converted when you load them, after a backup.
  • An unlimited server list, each server with its message of the day and player count.

Older worlds are converted when you load them, after a backup copy. Servers must update too. Thank you for playing the alpha, and tell us what you think in the discussions!
