Update 1.0.4 — Build your monster, command the outbreak

On Steam

The horde has changed. Update 1.0.4 is now live, bringing the full 1.0 overhaul to My Zombies Are Hungry: a rebuilt world and interface, more ways to shape and command your creatures, changing weather, and two new ways to play after finishing Normal.

If you're returning from 0.1.61, these notes cover everything arriving with this update—not just the final 1.0.4 fixes.

Build your monster—and see it fight

Your Horde now puts the creature itself at the centre of the screen, with a clearer composition panel, body-slot previews and a way to watch your build in action.

  • Equipped jaws, arms and legs are modelled on the creature: claws, tendons, bone plates, knuckles, fangs, glands and sacs. Part thumbnails show the actual parts.
  • Part choices have distinct behaviours and costs. Runner tendons trade health for speed and pouncing; armored haunches resist fire hoses and improve toughness, but slow the creature and prevent leaps.
  • The basic variants have a role too, including rushing with the pack, catching fleeing people and healing while feeding. Choose for the district ahead rather than automatically equipping the newest unlock.
  • Creature presentation, portraits and in-raid animation have been reworked, with clearer build stats and part descriptions.

Five active abilities. Time to make a decision.

Unlock abilities through the campaign, buy them with Bones and choose your loadout before deploying. You can bring two at first, and three from the City onward.

  • Frenzy Roar: a burst of speed and feeding, followed by exhaustion.
  • Dig In: stop moving to withstand incoming damage.
  • Bait Scream: draw occupants out of a building—then catch them before they escape.
  • Bloater Burst: sacrifice zombies to break a door and stun nearby responders. In Hardcore, that sacrifice is permanent.
  • Raise the Fallen: bring back recent losses once per raid. Timing matters.

The raid bar shows ability shortcuts, cooldowns and ready cues. Tactical hold lets you stop time with Space or the controller's Y button, move the camera, place a Hunger Beacon and queue abilities before resuming.

The Glutton is hungry too

The Harvest has a new presentation and a clearer threat: from your fourth purchase onward, buying an organ also lets the Glutton eat an unowned organ. Its marked target tells you what is at risk. Buy that target first and it takes a different one; your owned organs are safe.

The bite is now animated and sounded, the organ links meet their nodes cleanly, and bought organs no longer leave misleading black circles behind them.

A world worth overrunning

Villages, towns, cities and megapolises have been rebuilt with new buildings, creatures, people, vehicles and environmental detail. Living streets, parked cars, greenery, landmarks, night lighting and the aftermath of destruction give each district more character.

Weather now changes both the view and the fight. Rain, snow, fog, wind and storms affect movement, visibility and the human response. Check the forecast and expected responders before deploying; the pause screen explains the current effects. Gusts are telegraphed before they push exposed zombies, and severe storms can ground aircraft.

Hardcore: keep the horde alive

Completing a Normal campaign unlocks Hardcore and Fun Mode. Normal remains the forgiving option: raid losses regrow.

In Hardcore, the Village is your grace period. From your first Town raid onward, losses are permanent—even if you return to the Village. The game warns you before that first permanent raid. Growing your capacity adds zombies, and Rebuild lets you spend Bones to restore part of your missing horde.

Free Retreat becomes a timed Withdraw under fire. Lose the whole permanent horde and the outbreak is eradicated. Mode badges and the raid-results population breakdown make the rules and your remaining numbers visible throughout the campaign.

Fun Mode: the outbreak gets strange

Fun Mode is an optional modifier for Normal or Hardcore, with 25 events ranging from Disco Apocalypse and UFOs to portals, meteors and a micro black hole. Expect common, rare and legendary surprises, plus a gallery of discoveries.

Combining Fun with Hardcore is unranked. Some events can destroy buildings and the zombies inside them, so watch the streets as well as the spectacle.

Interface, onboarding and fixes

  • Rebuilt main menu, campaign selection, District, Harvest, Your Horde, Tactics, results and Settings screens, with new artwork, typography and clearer navigation.
  • First launch now goes from language selection to the title screen and New Campaign. Home/Menu is available throughout the game; during a raid it opens the pause menu.
  • Reworked first-run lessons for claiming sectors, discoveries, parts, tactics and abilities. The first raid starts held so you can read and aim before the clock runs.
  • Improved controller prompts and focus, popup behaviour, mouse-wheel zoom while held, district panning and ultrawide battlefield framing.
  • Clearer Hunger Beacon placement and house selection; fewer distracting rings, improved responder framing, and better visual and audio feedback for abilities.
  • Fixed long Fun-event sounds continuing after the raid, misleading creature-demo visuals and several tutorial, layout and localization issues.
  • 1.0.4 fixes Hardcore losses being refunded when an interrupted raid cannot be resumed, adds clearer mode rules and population results, and keeps settlement-lock text inside its tile.
  • Added in-game achievements, campaign records and completion/unlock screens.

Your existing campaign

Pre-1.0 saves carry forward as Normal campaigns, preserving upgrades, Bones, sector progress and records. Hardcore and Fun are selected when starting a new campaign; you do not need to erase your current progress to install the update.

Thank you for playing, testing and helping this outbreak grow. If something goes wrong, please tell us your version, campaign mode, settlement and what happened in the Steam discussions.

Stay hungry.
