Grandpa's Tackle Box: Story Update

On Steam

Grandpa left you his tackle box, a letter, and a fishing journal with its pages scattered across the five waters. This update gives Deep Hook a story, a hand-drawn world map, full controller support, and a lot more life on the water while you wait for a bite.

Existing saves carry straight over: Grandpa's letter is waiting the next time you load in, and you keep all your progress and gear.

The story: Grandpa's Tackle Box

  • Start at the pond, where Arlo has been keeping Grandpa's old bamboo rod for you.

  • Five chapters, one for each zone. Every shopkeeper knew Grandpa at a different age and has a page of his journal to give back.

  • Talk to the shopkeepers when a gold ! appears over their shop. Each one has a small gift for you.

  • The permit quests are now part of the story: each keeper sets you a few tasks (including your next rod), vouches for you, and sells you the permit to the next water.

  • Find the fish Grandpa never caught, then head home for the last page… and his lucky straw hat.

  • Read every page you've collected in the new Story menu.

A hand-drawn world map

  • The zone list is now Grandpa's old chart: pond, river, mountain lake, coast and the dark trench of the Deep, linked by a dashed trail.

  • Pick a zone and your straw-hat token walks the trail there. Locked zones tell you which permit you need.

Life on the water

  • Fish shadows: the fish you're about to hook now circles your bobber. Its size and shape come from the real fish, so a big shadow means a big fight, and rare fish give themselves away with a faint glint.

  • Nibbles: the bobber twitches as fish test the bait before they bite.

  • Junk and treasure: sometimes the thing on your line isn't a fish: an old boot, a tin can, a coin pouch, or a message in a bottle with a tip or a scrap of someone's story. Junk casts no shadow, if you're watching closely.

Learn the water as you fish

  • A fish that gets away mid-reel is now identified and noted in your journal as "seen".

  • The journal shows what you've learned about each fish: when it's most active, what weather it likes, and what rod or bait it needs.

  • Shopkeepers now give a weather forecast for tomorrow, so you can plan a trip for the fish that only bite in the rain.

Controller and Steam Deck support

  • Play everything with a controller: A cast, hook and hold to reel · B back · X talk to the shopkeeper · LB/RB switch menus · Start pause · Select fold the goals panel.

A cleaner goals panel

  • Your story step, requests and special assignments now sit in one compact panel with progress bars, readable over every zone's water.

  • Press Tab (or Select) to fold it down to a single line. It glows briefly when something changes, and fades while your line is in the water.

  • Finished requests show a Claim button right in the panel.

Other improvements and fixes

  • All new text is translated into every supported language, and the bait shop sign, prices and weather names are now translated too.

  • Special assignments now show the actual hunt (e.g. "Catch a Golden Koi") instead of how they were unlocked.

  • Fixed: starting a new game after playing another save in the same session could carry over that save's catches and bait.

  • New store and library artwork.
