Snugfang · public · first seen
1.6 is the first half of Snugfang's visual overhaul, and it is the half you touch the most: every menu, card, list and readout in the game has been rebuilt from the ground up. Same game underneath. Everything you look at between rounds — and the HUD on top of them — is new. This is LIFE RING.
Main menu, CREW lobby, route choice, WHO LIVES, LOGBOOK, TRIALS, SETTINGS, pause, quit, OPEN WATERS, the results card and the in-round HUD: all twelve now share one language. Two typefaces — a chunky display face for headlines and a clean text face for everything else — dark chamfered cards over the live water, and a single rule for focus: there is exactly one orange thing on screen, and it is the thing you are about to press.

Focus is carried by a small life ring that glides from row to row instead of snapping — quick enough to keep up with a held stick, slow enough that your eye can follow it. Screens surface into place rather than popping in, and moving between menus runs a short tide wipe across the frame. Turn REDUCED MOTION on in ACCESSIBILITY and the ring snaps, the wipe becomes a plain fade and the surfacing flattens to a straight slide.

Every label on every rebuilt screen was measured in all twelve languages, at the default text size and at the largest one the game offers. Where a word would not fit its pill, the pill now shrinks the text instead of cutting it — which is how the German quit button lost the end of ABBRECHEN before this update. It has all of it now.

Bot decisions used to be sampled on render frames, so a crew of bots played slightly differently at 30 fps than at 144. They now decide on the fixed physics step: the same seed gives the same round on any machine, and a rider who is released or shoved off the ring lets go in the same step, with no one-frame tug.

This is half of the overhaul. The water, the crew and the arena itself are next — and the store page will change with them. Snugfang is still free, so feedback is still the only currency I take. Thanks for playing, and for talking to me.
