The "Renovations" Update

major update

New Day · build 23553807 · published

On SteamNotes only · this build shipped before we watched the app

See the announcement at the bottom of this post.

[ Facial Markings ]

You can now properly draw on islander's faces using the Facial Markings feature in the Islander Creator. It no longer changes color based on the skintone of the islander.

You can now use a "fill tool" to fill in a selected area with the current color.

Your old facial markings will not be usable anymore. You'll have to remake it.

[ Hairstyles ]

You can now adjust ponytails, drills, and etcetera on applicable islander hairstyles. You can either size them together or individually.

[ Custom Island ]

After creating 10 islanders, Fredrick will give you the ability to buy and customize your very own island. Unlocking this option allows you to unlock the brand new feature introduced in this update -- the ability to give your islanders a house.

[ Islander Homes ]

After unlocking your custom island, you'll be able to buy your islander their very own house.

You can buy a house by selecting

Details > House

in their apartment interior.

Giving your islander a house will add them to a list in the custom island builder UI. You can select a house swatch and place it down anywhere on the custom island. A house will cost you $1000.

[ Roommates ]

After giving your islander a house, other islanders will want to become roommates with them.

Of course, you can ban certain islanders from ever having this problem in the first place by using the "Banned Islanders" list on the house's UI.

You can either manually add islanders to a household as a roommate for $500 or wait until they get a "I wanna move in!" problem, which is free. If you remove an islander you added to a household, you'll get $250 back out of that $500 you initially spent.

Households all have a designated "Household Name" that you can set. This name will appear when hovering your mouse over the house.

Roommates have increased relationship decay/gain with each other. These factors can be altered considering what you have enabled, such as if an islander has the "attractive" quirk or the "faster relationships" ordinance is enabled.

Owners of a household can kick any of their roommates out if their relationship with them gets too low or if they end their friendship.

Household roommates can choose to move out of the household if they feel they aren't wanted there.

[ Islander Interaction: REVAMP ]

Before, when islanders left their apartment, they would simply roam the island and possibly sit on a bench or two. Now, that has changed.

Islanders can officially chat with each other on the island, workout, relax on the grass, or even dump Pampas on the ground!

Islanders can also watch another islander as they live their life outside of their home. They can follow said islander until they get bored and start to do something else.

When an islander is doing something, such as push-ups, other islanders can now make their way to said islander and join in! Group workout sesh, anyone?

All of this makes the island feel more alive. Being able to see your islanders chatting, doing stuff together, and just living life gives the game that sort of "oomph" it has been needing for quite some time now.

[ Bingo Revamp ]

Bingo has undergone a complete revamp! The entire minigame was recreated from the ground up in order to provide a much better and smoother experience for all players.

You can now have up to 4 cards in Bingo.

There's a new power meter that, when filled, grants you special rewards.

You can now play bingo alone, or with other islanders, if you're up for the challenge.

Bingo is no longer locked behind a specific timeframe. You can enjoy it at any point during the day now!

[ Dynamic Loading Screens ]

This has been a feature that I've wanted in New Day for a while. Instead of a boring running Fredrick on the loading screen when visiting various places, instead you'll see different pieces of artwork for the area you're loading into. Currently, this only applies to the following:

Knits' Nifty Clothing

Toasty's Town Hall

MemoMart

[ Bug-Fixes ]

  • Fixed a bug that could cause an islander to fall asleep after you finished the brushing teeth minigame.

  • Fixed a bug that caused werewolf tails to not get colored green when turning into a plant islander.

  • Fixed a bug that caused islanders to befriend other islander's babies.

  • Fixed a bug that caused the hair stylist's mannequin to have multiple hairs layered on-top of each other.

  • Fixed a bug that caused food pellets to become inaccessible by hungry fish if the pellets sank to the bottom of the tank.

  • Fixed an issue in the Room Editor that caused a notification to appear that told players to "Contact a Developer".

  • Fixed a bug that caused jailed islanders to be able to interrupt confession events.

  • Fixed a bug that allowed an islander to immediately want to confess to another islander despite JUST rejecting said islander.

  • Fixed a visual issue where two hairstyle sprites were swapped.

  • (Hopefully) Fixed a bug that caused long socks to clip through an islander's skin.

[ Changes / Additions ]

( Cutscenes )

  • Revamped the "Favorite Food Item" cutscene that played after an islander ate their favorite food.

( Islander Problems )

  • Added a new minigame, "Puzzle Face".

  • Added a new Foodie minigame, "Half the Meal".

  • Added a new minigame, "Memory Jumble".

  • Added a new problem, "Become a Roommate".

  • Added a new problem, "Relax on the Beach with a Friend".

  • Cameras placed in the Room Editor are now used as "main cameras" for your islanders interiors when you preview said interior.

( Fishing )

  • You can now sell all of your fish with 1 button located at the top of the screen once you finish the fishing minigame.

( Island )

  • You can no longer enter any building except for the Town Hall upon creating a new save file. Once you have an islander on your island, the buildings will open up. This also occurs when you create a save file, make an islander, then delete the only islander on your island.

  • An arrow will now be present above the Town Hall when you start a new game.

( MISC )

  • Updated the punching hand graphic you see when you punch an islander.

  • Bugs will now move around the screen instead of staying in one place. Pesky bee!

  • Bugs will now try to avoid your cursor. Why would they sit and willingly let you catch them? Put some work in!

  • Exiting the Islander Creator without saving when you've edited an islander that has already been created will now display different text.

  • Updated the soundtrack for the "Brush Islander's Teeth" minigame.

  • Added a confirmation menu to the Randomize Islander Appearance button.

LET'S TALK...

As many of you may know, New Day is Scrapbook Studio's lovechild, our baby to the world of gamers. We want nothing but the best for our child as we raise and care for it. So we're doing something that will secure New Day's future while also making the game more enjoyable for its fans.

New Day is going through a complete overhaul.

We're in the process of remaking the game from the ground up with better features, heavily improved optimization, and mechanics that differentiate it from other games in the genre.

We wanted to implement these features in the current project, such as a "Custom Island Creator", and various re-imaginings of other game-play functions, but we ran into a few struggles.

  1. We're on an outdated version of Unity. Meaning we can't take hold of Unity's newer optimization tactics and functionalities in order to properly implement the features that we want the game to have.

  2. The base programming of New Day was created in 2022-2023, back when we didn't know the scope of the project nor considered how to optimize the game. Since then, we've grown with knowledge beyond even our own comprehension and are willing to put in the effort to make the game better, more enjoyable for the fanbase, and optimized to high heavens in order to get it to work on lower-end computers without consistent crashing or freezes.

  3. With a complete overhaul, we have a chance to change the game entirely.

Within the past half-month or so, we've been working on the new version of the project. And it's becoming something of a 'beaut' as one would say.

The new version of New Day will have the player able to create their very own island, move buildings around, and even rotate the camera around the island AND zoom in to watch their islanders up-close!

We plan to share the details with you all within the coming months, and before you start to wonder... yes, this version of the game will be available for players to play once we've decided that the base functionality is finished and ready for the public.

When this version becomes fully up-to-date with the current version, we'll backlog the current version onto a separate Steam branch that we'll title "Old Day", while the currently-worked-on overhauled project becomes the main storefront game that you'll be able to play.

We hope you're excited for the future of New Day, because we sure are. Thank you all for supporting us and being behind us as we walk down this jaw-dropping path that lay before our team. We encourage you to join the discord and be on the lookout for future previews regarding what we're titling -- "Project Overhaul".

Until next time, New Dayers.
