Bark & Blade · build 22274981 · published

On SteamNotes only · this build shipped before we watched the app

Dungeons overhauled, dodge is a real stamina commitment, and performance is smoother. Plus a big pile of fixes.

What's New

  • Tutorial skip - hold Y at any point during the tutorial to skip it and jump straight into the game. The skip bar is always visible so you know the option is there.
  • More keybinds shown in controls menu - the Confirm (Y) and FPS/LOD Info (~) keys now appear in the keybind list so you always know what does what.
  • Dancing flowers actually dance now - the sunflower fairies now respond properly to the music system instead of looping through their default animation reel.
  • Sunflower fairies track the sun - during daytime, the dancing flowers gently rotate to face the sunlight. Each one faces a slightly different direction so they look natural, not robotic.

Improvements

  • Bigger talent tree icons - talent node icons in the talent tree (N) are now larger and easier to read at a glance.
  • Dodge is now a commitment - dodging drains a massive chunk of your stamina. You can pull off one, maybe two dodges before you're empty. Choose your moments wisely.
  • Smoother performance across the board - eliminated hundreds of unnecessary memory allocations that ran every frame, reduced GPU overhead from visual effects, and optimized AI awareness checks. Less stuttering, fewer frame drops, and better overall FPS on all hardware.
  • Dungeons are bigger and more open - rooms are noticeably larger with real breathing room, combat arenas give you space to fight, and each dungeon has more rooms to explore overall.
  • Dungeons now have solid walls - no more walking through walls in certain room configurations; every wall is now properly blocked.
  • Better dungeon atmosphere - props, decorations, and lanterns now spawn throughout dungeons; no more empty stone rooms.
  • Dungeon goals track correctly - enemy kills, goal interactions, and all other dungeon objectives now register properly.
  • Cleaner Now Playing display - the music info panel now shows just the song title and artist name, without the frequency bars and paw icon cluttering the view.
  • Quick-travel countdown - the radial travel menu (hold U) now shows a live countdown timer while you hover over a destination. Watch the seconds tick from 3.0 to 0.0 as the confirm ring fills.

Bug Fixes

  • Melee attack no longer locks up - found and fixed the true root cause of the permanent left-click lockup. Any brief input lock could silently eat your button release, leaving attacks permanently stuck. The game now instantly resets attack input whenever any lock clears, and a background auto-recovery catches any remaining edge cases within seconds.
  • Tutorial now starts correctly on new games - fixed multiple bugs where the tutorial could fail to appear when starting a fresh save profile or reusing an existing save slot.
  • Damage numbers fixed - floating damage numbers now correctly appear above enemies for all attack types, including basic bite and scratch.
  • Dodge spam fixed - dodging now properly requires enough stamina to cover the full cost; no more spamming dodge on empty.
  • Dungeon save fix - quitting or saving while inside a dungeon no longer traps your spawn point inside it. You always reload in the overworld.
  • Dungeon mission banner now appears - the goal reveal screen and progress tracker were sometimes invisible when entering a dungeon; now always shown.
  • Popups no longer cover the pause menu - damage numbers, XP gains, and combat notifications now properly hide when the game is paused.
  • Weapon hotbar centered - the weapon slot icons at the bottom of the screen are now properly centered.
  • Now Playing display fixed - the song name in the settings menu no longer appears as a mangled vertical mess; it now shows cleanly as "Song - Artist".
  • Sniffing while airborne - your wolf can no longer sniff while jumping or falling.
  • Lava/Crystal Cave teleport - fixed a bug where fast-traveling between these areas could cause the destination to vanish.
