After a very long time spent painting ourselves and standing perfectly still in front of each other, PeekaBlock is now in Early Access. Thank you for waiting. And to everyone who played the public playtest — thank you for the bug reports, the screenshots, and the deeply cursed disguises.
You are a block. Hiders stick cubes onto their own body, paint every piece, strike a pose and try to pass as scenery. Hunters walk around shooting anything that looks slightly wrong.
It is hide and seek, except the hiding is arts and crafts and the seeking is trust issues.
You will get found. You will also, at some point, watch a hunter walk right past you while you are a very convincing chair. That second thing is what the whole game is for.
When you go down you come back as a ghost made of your own head — your paint, your cubes, the entire build you spent the round on. Every ghost is different, because every ghost is the thing you made. Fly it around, watch the rest of the match, and throw bananas, tomatoes and paint bombs at the people who can still lose.
Pirate Cove, Zoo, Battlefield, Egyptian Temple, PeekaHouse, Big Kitchen, PeekAttic and Alien — each with its own music, so you can tell where you are with your eyes closed. Which, as a hunter, is sometimes the strategy.
There is a RANDOM MAP button too, and it tries not to hand you the same map five times running.
Lobbies run from 2 to 14 players, with voice chat and text chat built in.
Rounds end with a Reveal — everybody gets to see where the hiders actually were, which is where you learn that the "rock" you walked past nine times was a person.
Then the gallery: every creation from the round, side by side, with a like button for the ones that earned it. Winning is good. Doing something everyone remembers is better.
There are 24 achievements as well, including one for surviving a whole round on paint alone with no blocks at all. Good luck with that one.
The core game is here and very playable. It is also version 0.1.0, and that will show: expect bugs, rough edges, and a few buttons greyed out because they are not built yet.
We expect to be in Early Access for around three months. On the way:
Cactus Courtyard, Candy and Plaster Gallery are off the rotation for now while we finish the newer maps. They are not gone, just resting.
No log files to dig up, no folders to zip, nothing technical to attach:
Tell us what broke, what felt bad, and what made you laugh. That last one matters more than you would think.
Play with friends if you can. This game is at its best when someone is wheezing on voice chat because they are pretending to be a lamp.
Thank you for being here on day one. Now go hide.
