Main changes

  • Pausing with P and then opening a screen could leave you stuck, with your mouse clicks ignored. It no longer does, and the game stays paused when you close the screen: the world no longer runs on under the PAUSED banner.
  • When you make a companion the LEADER while riding in a snow buggy, the buggy now stays with the new leader, with its fuel and missiles as they were.
  • Leaving the map now puts you back where you came from.
  • A demolished building no longer leaves an invisible wall where it stood.
  • Resting and eating no longer cost alertness. Time spent awake and active still does.
  • Hang glider: before a launch the game now warns you with an INJURED PILOT card if the pilot is badly injured, or an UNSKILLED PILOT card if he has little gliding skill. Either pilot will fly only just above stall speed. You can still launch.
  • Hang glider: left-click in flight fires one homing missile. You carry 25 per flight, reloaded at every launch, and they cannot be fired on the ground. The Frostopedia now says so.
  • Snow buggy missile stocks corrected to the 1989 numbers, ground / anti-aircraft / torpedo: Fox 10/40/5, Cat 20/35/10, Wolf 40/30/25. Ground and anti-aircraft were crossed.
  • RECRUITMENT lesson: the COMPANIONS tile now appears in Courtenay's house, so you can open the COMPANIONS screen and make him the LEADER as the lesson asks. The cards no longer promise that Courtenay will ask Grice for you: you take control of him and bring him back yourself. A BACK TO YOUR BUGGY hint tells you how to drive on.

Loading a game

  • Loading now cancels a fall, a water rescue, an injury screen or a buggy rollover that was under way. You start standing still.
  • An enemy missile already in the air no longer follows you into a loaded game, and wrecks from the game you left are cleared.
  • The morale penalty for captured friends is no longer charged again every time you relaunch and load.
  • Characters you left outdoors load outdoors, not listed inside a house.
  • Changing leader or loading could put one character at another's spot. Fixed.
  • Enemy supply and a few report numbers are right after a load, and the false "still out of time" line is gone.

New game

  • NEW GAME without quitting first now starts a clean war: no dead enemy units or kill tallies from the last one, and a second campaign in one sitting can be won.
  • A new game after quitting in a snow buggy starts you standing still on skis, not rolling in a free buggy.
  • From the title screen, LOAD GAME or FROSTOPEDIA then X, or GAME OPTIONS then PLAY, no longer drops you into a world that was never started.

Skiing, snow buggy, hang glider

  • A knock-out ski fall rescues you and you stay rescued, instead of snapping back to the crash site.
  • A buggy rollover interrupted mid-tumble no longer crashes your next buggy.
  • The incoming-missile warning arrow now shows on skis, in the snow buggy and in the hang glider, not only in the sniper view.
  • After a safe landing, taxiing the hang glider onto a lake or the sea sinks it, like a buggy.
  • Hang glider launches from a cliff behave the same at any frame rate.
  • A cable-car ride costs the same alertness whether you watch it or skip it.

Buildings

  • Standing next to a cable-car pylon, you can no longer ENTER, recruit in or demolish a settlement miles away.
  • An ENEMY HELD building could still be entered from one hidden spot. Closed.

Menus and cards

  • MAIN MENU or EXIT during a fall, a rescue or while wiring a demolition now cancels it cleanly, and you get the wiring time back.
  • The buttons on the MAIN MENU and EXIT TO WINDOWS cards sit side by side instead of one dropping to a second line.
  • The DISABLED / ENEMY HELD flash works while paused and never blinks late over a card.
  • The window title and the title screen show STEAM and the real build date. Please quote it when you report a problem.

Lessons

  • Settings a lesson forces (ENEMIES / MORTARS / BOMBERS) are never saved: quitting in the middle of a lesson leaves your own settings intact. The world is reset before ENEMIES comes back after a lesson.
  • Hang glider lessons: taxiing into water just ends the run with RUN AGAIN.

Development leftovers removed

  • A developer sniper test range near Singleton church, with seven enemies that could be shot for morale without end, is gone from normal play. Nothing else at Singleton changed.
  • Backspace on the map, which rewound the war a turn, now works only in Ctrl+F10 testing mode, and the tilde console can no longer be opened at all. Ctrl+F10 itself is unchanged.
  • The game no longer writes a growing debug file to your disk.

New installs

  • Brand-new installs start in borderless fullscreen with vsync on, so the title screen no longer makes your graphics card roar. Existing players keep their own settings.

Known issue

  • A demolished building does not yet show its ruin.

A note: the community is actively working on making the landscape and terrain more faithful to the original.
