Decrypting the Unknown – Decryption Mini-Games in Ghost Receipt

In Ghost Receipt, some items are worth more than what you can see on the surface.

A damaged device, corrupted memory module or suspicious piece of cyberware might contain hidden data — but getting to it requires more than simply pressing a “decrypt” button.

With the Decrypt Bench, players can attempt to recover hidden information through a series of interactive mini-games. Successful decryption can reveal additional intel, uncover valuable data and make certain items far more interesting than they first appeared.

But accessing that information comes with a risk.

Signal Calibration

The first decryption challenge is about restoring a corrupted signal.

You are given a source signal and a target value, with several processing modules sitting between them. Each module can modify the signal through different operations.

The goal is to configure the modules so that the final output matches the target signal.

Every adjustment consumes limited signal charge, so blindly cycling through combinations is rarely a good strategy. You need to follow how the signal changes through the chain and decide which configuration will bring it closer to the target.

Once everything looks right, the signal can be validated.

If the calibration matches, the raw data is recovered.

Memory Trace

Some devices don't contain a clean signal at all.

Instead, their memory structure has been corrupted.

During Memory Trace, the system scans a block of memory and briefly reveals a pointer chain connecting several nodes. The information then begins to decay and disappears.

Now it is your job to reconstruct the same path from memory.

Start and target locations remain visible, but the sequence between them has to be rebuilt manually before the timer runs out.

Submit the correct route and the memory can be recovered.

Make a mistake, and the system has to attempt another trace.

Security Breach

Higher-security data requires a more aggressive approach.

In Security Breach, multiple streams of hexadecimal data constantly move through different ports.

Each security layer provides a route key. You need to identify the correct write window inside the moving data stream, select the appropriate payload and inject it at exactly the right location.

Successfully establishing the first channels is only the beginning.

Later security layers must continue using those same channels while new route signatures appear. Eventually, the complete injection matrix is validated before access to the protected data is granted.

It turns decryption into a small cyberpunk hacking sequence rather than a passive progress bar.

Failure Has Consequences

Decryption is not completely safe.

Failed injections, incorrect traces or exhausting the available signal can cause a Signal Burnout.

The first failure may simply overheat the Decrypt Bench and force you to stop.

Repeated failures can damage the item's signal matrix entirely, leaving it in a state where an Expert is required to repair it.

That creates a choice:

Do you keep pushing for the hidden data yourself, or stop before you damage something potentially valuable?

Why Decrypt Items?

The goal of the system is to make suspicious items feel like more than objects with a price tag.

Decrypting an item can expose hidden data and additional intel that wasn't available when you first acquired it. Certain objects can therefore become considerably more useful — or more valuable — once you understand what is actually stored inside them.

That also connects back into the investigation side of Ghost Receipt.

A cheap-looking device might contain something important.

A piece of corrupted cyberware might hide information someone wanted erased.

And sometimes the data inside an item may be worth more than the item itself.

Every item tells a story. You just have to get inside it first.
