Foundations of the Hunt

Playtest 0.1.2 → 0.1.28

Thank you to every playtest investigator! Here is a recap of our first updates: new places to explore, far scarier hunts, and everything you need to survive them.

Three new maps

  • Ashford House: a 1930s family home, frozen in time since its occupants vanished. Living room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, study... plus a double garage and an attic up the stairs.
  • Saint-Aubin Hospital: closed since a fire in its operating theatre. 15 rooms over 2 levels, from reception to the patient rooms, and a basement with a morgue, autopsy room and storeroom.
  • Villa Mercier: a modern two-storey villa with big bay windows, a pool and a garden... and a child's bedroom with drawings you'd better not look at too closely.

The investigation

  • Three new evidence types, 9 in total (each entity still has three):
    • Radiation: the Geiger counter goes above 2.5 µSv/h in its room.
    • Recorded voice: a recorder placed in its room picks up a whisper and shows "EVP!".
    • IR silhouette: the infrared projector reveals its green silhouette crossing the beam.

  • Spirit box: ask your questions from a menu... or out loud into your mic, in English or French (Windows speech recognition, can be turned off).
  • Fingerprints only show up under the UV light.
  • Free starter kit: Geiger counter, recorder and infrared projector included. The drawn entity can always be identified with the team's gear.
  • Cursed objects, found on the map (one game in five): the Ritual Seal, the Ouija board (a single question, at a heavy price) and the Book of Shadows. Powerful, but dangerous.

Truly terrifying hunts

  • The entity gets everywhere and rushes its prey. Before a hunt, lights flicker, your heart pounds and the screen pulses: run and hide!
  • Hiding spots: wardrobes, under beds, hospital lockers, asylum metal cabinets. But talking, keeping a device on or always hiding in the same place can give you away.
  • Every entity has its own quirk, described in the bestiary. The Revenant sprints the moment it sees you, the Trickster cuts the power, the Weeper only hunts players who are alone...
  • Its footsteps carry direction and sound different on wood, tiles, metal or carpet. It opens and slams doors near you.
  • Crucifix: placed on the floor, it prevents hunts inside the range shown by a circle.
  • Jump scares and manifestations as sanity drops: a whisper in your ear, visible breath, a rolling object, a running tap, a TV switching on (you can turn them off with E).

Atmosphere

  • Weather and time of night for every contract: rain, thunderstorms and their lightning, fog, from dusk to midnight.
  • Reworked graphics: baked lighting, indirect light, a realistic flashlight beam, wear and grime that changes every game, TAA anti-aliasing.

Equipment and progression

  • 4 inventory slots.
  • Batteries for every electronic device: glitches when low, shutdown when empty.
  • Tier I, II and III upgrades for every device: range, responsiveness, battery life...
  • Stackable special contracts (No lights, Tight timer, Single evidence) for up to ×2.6 rewards.
  • Weekly challenges: Total blackout, Fragile minds, Stormy night, Bare hands, Thick mist, Nightmare.
  • End-of-contract standings with titles: Photographer, Investigator, Survivor, Daredevil, Wanderer.
  • 20 Steam achievements and a status your friends can see.

Customisation and multiplayer

  • 10 investigators to choose from, 3D preview, skin tone (8 tones).
  • Outfits and themes for tops and pants, calling cards for your agent card: buy them or earn them.
  • 6-character join code for lobbies, and a streamer mode that hides it.
  • If the host dies, any survivor can start the departure. The board shows every player's sanity.
  • Safe start: no hunts during the first 30 seconds.

Fixes and improvements

  • The entity can no longer leave the maps; thrown items no longer go through walls, floors or furniture.
  • The breaker works everywhere, with a "Circuit overloaded" warning.
  • New options: Brightness, Show FPS, colourblind mode.
  • No more doubled footsteps, sharper shadows, many reflections and textures fixed.
  • Quieter devices: the EMF, thermometer and Geiger only beep when the reading changes.
