Sharper Combat, Maw Gifts & New Music

Mutant Tide Demo · published 13 Sep 2026, 23:30 UTC

Following the Tide and Maw updates, this update focuses on making Mutant Tide combat clearer, more satisfying to build around, and easier to read when the screen gets busy. There are new rewards for descending, refreshed weapon effects, a larger soundtrack, and fixes across upgrades, evolutions and co-op.

The Maw and the Tide

  • The Maw has a new living mouth appearance, with clearer opening, breathing and descent effects.
  • Your first successful descent now offers a choice: Current Fins remove the movement penalty from crossing or fighting the current, while Brine Heart grants 20 maximum HP and heals 20 HP.
  • Each player can earn one Maw gift per run. In co-op, players choose separately.
  • Nearby Maw prompts better explain the health cost, rewards, hold time and increased danger. Boss locks and interrupted descents now show the correct status.
  • New water guidance explains currents and how flooded ground changes enemy movement.
  • Conductive Tide: Chain Lightning and Necrotic Storm can jump farther between enemies sharing the same flooded pool.

Clearer, more distinctive combat

  • Pressure Wave / Tidal Crush: curved water fronts, foam and wakes make each attack easier to read.
  • Tide Lance / Crushing Depth: clearer beam lanes and impact marks replace the giant solid streaks, helping you see enemies and hazards through the attack.
  • Tidal Pull / Gravity Maw: outward and returning currents better communicate the attack's movement and collapse.
  • Void Lance / Leviathan Tide: sharper silhouettes and clearer returning shards.
  • Pulse / Abyssal Shockwave: open water crests show the attack's actual reach.
  • Static Field / Necrotic Field: cleaner electrical boundaries replace oversized shields and repeated flashes.
  • Siren Call / Abyssal Chorus: travelling notes and sound arcs better show where the attack lands.
  • Abyss Eel / Leviathan Brood: refreshed bodies, fins and trails, with better opening targets and clearer evolved forms.
  • Void Corruption: slower ripples and a lighter pool effect keep more of the fight visible.
  • Smaller everyday hit and death effects, less lightning clutter, and combined rapid damage numbers help keep busy fights readable.
  • Enemy attacks have clearer warnings for slams, charges and other attacks. Hostile shots stand out more clearly from your own weapons.
  • Refreshed seabed textures reduce the repeated grid appearance across all five stages.

Upgrades that are easier to understand

  • Upgrade descriptions are brighter, easier to read and less likely to shrink into tiny text.
  • Fixed upgrade choices occasionally losing their icons.
  • Stat choices show the change you're about to receive. Evolution progress is labelled more clearly.
  • General run bonuses, weapon specific infusions and evolution requirements are now distinguished in the descriptions.
  • Compatible weapons picked up later correctly receive previously earned weapon bonuses from Siren's Debt and affected synergies.
  • Pause-screen weapon summaries show more useful information, such as blade counts, chain targets, pool damage and beam reach.
  • Character selection now shows updated default and alternate weapon descriptions and previews. Fixed missing or obscured previews and effects lingering after switching characters.

Weapon and balance fixes

  • Fixed several cases where evolutions lost Area, range or other upgrade benefits, or where a speed upgrade could make an already-fast evolved weapon slower.
  • Crushing Depth retains its projectile spread and reach, and now receives its intended wider beam.
  • Dread Maw keeps its extra blades. Once its visible spin reaches the speed limit, further Attack Speed increases strengthen its contact damage.
  • Larger harpoons, returning blades, orbit blades, fields and eels now have hit areas that better match their upgraded size.
  • Fixed Tidal Pull and Gravity Maw repeatedly applying the same return hit. These attacks may deal less damage than before; their inward pull still works.
  • Void Corruption now deals steadier damage with controlled spreading. Additional speed beyond its casting limit strengthens its pools.
  • Fixed pools applying critical damage twice, hitting defeated enemies or repeatedly creating patches from the same kill. Corrected residue effects and Void Wake healing.
  • Leviathan Tide healing now follows its actual return movement and respects healing restrictions.
  • Abyssal Chorus correctly applies vulnerability to its direct target. Eels retarget more reliably, and Leviathan Brood no longer triggers its death burst twice.
  • Fixed spent projectiles landing extra hits and fast enemy shots sometimes passing through players.
  • Corrected several Archive descriptions and weapon damage records.

Music and sound

  • Added Blood Current, Abyssal Pursuit and Drowned Memories to runs and the Jukebox.
  • Added Stillwater to the Upgrade Shop and Achievements screen.
  • Expanded the playlist with two returning tracks and added credits for h5isy and Vinyl Ribbon Sound.
  • Fixed run music being cut off by an early track change. Songs now play to their natural ending.
  • After a boss fight, the interrupted run song resumes from where it left off. Overlapping bosses no longer repeatedly restart or prematurely end the boss music.
  • Improved Jukebox playback, recovery from interrupted music, transitions and music-volume behaviour.
  • Important danger, damage and reward sounds are less likely to be drowned out by repeated routine combat sounds.

Reliability, performance and co-op

  • Improved performance in crowded fights involving corruption pools, Dread Maw trails and lightning chains. Further work on very crowded late-game runs is ongoing.
  • Fixed a crash when quitting after visiting the main menu.
  • Fixed repeated relic confirmations, stale effects after leaving a run and several errors involving effects attached to removed characters or enemies.
  • Improved controller scrolling, focus and fallback behaviour in affected menus and reward screens.
  • This build also includes the recent Steam fullscreen fix for affected Windows laptops, co-op level-up corrections, fixes for XP and power-up drops in crowded runs, temporary damage-bonus fixes, and save and leaderboard reliability improvements.
  • Corrected stage spawning so intended stage difficulty applies properly. Some later stages may feel tougher than their previous bugged behaviour.
  • Updated the demo with the improvements available within its existing content limits.

Thanks for playing and sending in reports. Keep sharing your builds, favourite weapons, and any problems you encounter especially during deep runs.
