In MAFATE, you play as Elios, a young mail carrier who travels the trails of the cirque to deliver letters to its inhabitants.
But before becoming a video game character, the mail carrier of Mafate was a very real figure, deeply connected to the history of the cirque.
In Mafate, delivering the mail has long meant traveling the trails on foot, sometimes for hours, to reach the different settlements scattered throughout the cirque.
The mail carrier did more than simply deliver letters. They were also a familiar face - a connection between the inhabitants and the outside world.
This story was one of the inspirations behind Elios.
Elios isn't meant to be a recreation of the traditional Mafate mail carrier.
Instead, we wanted to create our own character: a young and curious mail carrier who knows the trails, but is still discovering the world around him.
His bag, outfit, and role are inspired by this real history, while his own story is entirely his own.
For Elios, every delivery is also an opportunity to meet someone.
Along the trails, he reconnects with the inhabitants, discovers their stories, and builds relationships with the people who call the cirque home.
That's what we wanted Elios to represent: in Mafate, a mail carrier does more than deliver letters - they help keep the community connected.
Although Elios is a fictional character, his story is deeply inspired by a very real part of Mafate's history.
Through him, we wanted to pay tribute to the mail carriers who once walked - and still walk - these same trails, while imagining our own way of telling their story.
Today, Elios follows in their footsteps.
And alongside Luna, his living camera, he invites you to discover Mafate for yourself.
