Update to May 2026 Development Pre-Release

It's been a while since the last update of the projectM application on Steam, and much work has been done since late 2022 on both the projectM visualizer itself and the standalone application.

Additionally, the projectM development team is now able to publish updates here on Steam directly, so we'll be staying closer to updates/releases on GitHub.

Here's a short overview of which features were added or improved since the last Steam release in December 2022:

  • Completely rewritten rendering backend and preset expression evaluator, making projectM compatible with almost all Milkdrop 2 presets.

  • Added additional waveform modes present in other community Milkdrop forks like BeatDrop and Milkdrop 3.

  • New audio processing code, which now closely resembles the way Milkdrop turns audio into spectrum and beat data.

  • Many improvements and compatibility fixes for preset shaders.

  • A new UI with a menu and settings window (press ESC to toggle the UI).

  • Drag & Drop support for presets: just drop a preset or directory onto the window.

  • The macOS release is now a universal binary, running natively on both Intel and Silicon Macs. It's also code-signed and notarized.

  • projectM now ships with the "Cream of the Crop" preset pack, containing over 9.000 selected presets.

The full release notes, additional downloads, hotkey documentation and some troubleshooting information is available on GitHub:

As always, we do not use Steam's DRM to shrink-wrap the executables, so you can run the projectM application without starting Steam first.

If you encounter any issues, please open an issue on GitHub if possible:

The projectM developers will read comments here occasionally though.
