Hi everyone!
We wanted to update you on how development is going and share what we’re working on! We’re so pleased so many of you loved the Another Door demo, which, if you haven’t tried yet, you definitely should grab some friends and sacrifice them play:
In this update, we’re looking at the biomes as we’ve just finished some big improvements and locked in our third! If you’ve played the demo, you will have seen the first biome - the Sunless Woodland! After you and your friends have defeated all that lies within it in the main game, you’ll get to progress to our next area, the City of Faded Roses (It even has a shiny new door and some new icons!)
We’re going full “No beast is more savage than man” with this one. New effects like Bad Blood and Boor will hinder your journey if you are unfortunate enough to pick them up, and there’s a Jovial Innkeeper who’ll help you out, but only if you cooperate.
New characters like the Bell Boy will have you keeping a close eye on your friends in this biome, whereas the Banker will ask how important your gems are to you. The Butcher is my new favourite and is a true agent of chaos that allows you to gamble all you have. Are you brave enough to try?
Right now, you have Poison to contend with, but that's just Biome 1. Other biomes will have their own standout effects to contend with, and some effects have new mechanics, like “If you lose one charge of this effect, do X” or “If you’re the player with the most of this effect…”! If you're looking to hang on to your gems, you'll also want to be careful around a certain pigeon...
You can expect around 30 new monsters, so over 60 new choices in total. Since it’s all about humans, the mechanics here revolve around gems. Because, you know, that’s all they care about. You DO want shiny gems, don’t you?
If balancing health is more your speed, here's a card choice you'll find alongside the Alive Cat, alongside a shared pot - a chance for you to make some team decisions, perhaps?
How We’re Doing It
We want every biome to feel unique and set you new challenges, so we mix in things we love, from film or video game references, legends from around the world, or just straight-up absurd encounters that our brains come up with. Each new biome should have new mechanics, so every run feels different, and players have to adapt their gameplay. Each biome also has a statue to resurrect the dead (in case you’ve lost your best co-operator), but it’s balanced and has different constraints depending on the biome.
What’s Next
We’ve got lots of things on the cards we can talk about, including the moons and celestial events you’re likely to face, or characters you might meet along the way - Sirius is our new favourite; he should definitely have an update all about him!
See you soon through Another Door!
