Vonkelveld runs on fields. Everything down there — heat, moisture, hunger, faith — is a number in a cell, pushed around by a small set of rules that have no idea what they mean. Someone asked me a question last week that I haven't been able to put down: if one of the people in that world became curious and worked out its physics, what would they find?So I went and checked. Not invented — checked, against the actual engine. Every claim in the document below corresponds to something real in the simulation: the smallest representable quantity, the tick, the propagation limit, the conservation guarantees, and the one primitive that is allowed to break them.If you play this game and you've ever wondered what your miracles look like from underneath — this is that.This is the first of a series.


ON THE GRAIN OF THE WORLD


Being the collected observations of Edrawyn of Coldbarrow, natural philosopher, concerning the smallest parts, the beat, and the edge; together with certain conclusions she did not wish to reach.

Preface


I set out, forty years ago, to weigh rain.It was not an ambitious project. The millers wanted to know how much water a season would bring them, and I wanted to be paid. I built a pan, and a balance, and a shelter for the balance, and I began.I did not find out how much water a season brings. I found out that the world has a bottom to it, a beat to it, and an edge to it; that its accounts are kept perfectly and are occasionally forged; that our luck is not thrown but read; and one further thing, at the end, which I have set down as plainly as I can and would rather I had not learned.I am told a philosopher should present her conclusions and then defend them. I will present them in the order I was forced into them, because that is the order in which they are believable.

I. The Grain


Everything divides. A measure of water divides into halves, and the halves into halves. The question that occupied my first decade was whether this goes on forever.It does not.The experiment is tedious and anyone may repeat it. Warm a sealed room by some very small amount, and then by half that, and then by half again, measuring each time. At first the room answers you honestly. Then it answers you less. Then — and this is the thing — it stops answering at all. Not faintly. Not within the error of my instruments, which by then were good. It stops.I want to be exact about what is strange here, because the careless reader will think I am merely describing a bad balance. If you halve a quantity enough times, you expect an effect too small to see. That is not what happens. What happens is that the effect does not occur. Pour in half a grain of warmth and the room is not warmed by half a grain; the room is not warmed. Pour in half a grain a thousand times and the room is exactly as cold as when you began. The world does not keep the change.I call the smallest amount that the world will keep a grain. A thousand grains make a measure. Below a half-grain there is not "a little"; there is nothing, and it is a nothing the world enforces.From this follows a second thing, which took me another six years to see and which I consider the most important sentence in this treatise.Every exchange in the world loses toward nothing.When two quantities are multiplied — and the world is always multiplying quantities, that is most of what it does — the answer is trimmed to whole grains, and the trimming always goes toward nothing, never away from it. A hair is lost. It is always the same direction. It is never given back.This is why heat spreads and never gathers. It is why a fire, left alone, becomes ash and the ash does not become fire. It is why the dead do not rise. Not because some great law forbids it, but because the world keeps its books to the nearest grain and rounds down, and has done so, without exception, since it began.I have met priests who wanted a grander reason. I understand them. But I have weighed it, and it is this.

II. The Beat


Time is not a river. It is a drum.This is easy to state and was miserable to prove. Watch anything closely enough — a thermometer, a shadow, the level in a pan — and its change is not smooth. It steps. Between the steps, nothing whatever happens. I built a mechanism to sample forty times within a single step and can report that the world, during that interval, is entirely still. It is not moving slowly. It is not moving.I call one step a watch.What I did not expect, and what cost me a friendship with Ingmar of Saltwatch, who did not believe me for eleven years, is that different things step on different counts.The warmth of the air answers on every watch. Certain other motions of the world — I will not list them here, the tables are appended — answer only on every second watch, or every fourth. They are not slow. They are absent, and then they are present, and between those two states there is no passage. A phenomenon that fires on every fourth watch does not exist during the other three. It is not resting. It is not there.I ask the reader to sit with that for a moment, because I have never found a way to make it sound reasonable, and it is nevertheless the plainest fact in this book.There is worse. My father kept records, and his father kept records, and I keep records, and between the three of us there are two hundred and six years of them.There is a behaviour of the world — a way that moisture and warmth answer one another, quite ordinary, quite universal — that does not appear in the records before the ninth year of my grandfather's keeping. I do not mean that it was not noticed. My grandfather was a better observer than I am and his instruments for that particular question were the same as mine. I mean that the world did not do it, and then the world did it, and there was no year in which it did it partly.I have checked this three times, once in a fury, and it is true.A law that begins is not a law. It is a decision.

III. The Pace of News


Nothing in the world is felt at a distance sooner than one field's breadth per watch.I proved this with fires and with floods and with a great deal of walking. It does not matter what the influence is — heat, water, the pressure of a crowd, the spread of a sickness. It does not matter how violent. A thing that happens here is not known there until the news has walked, and the news walks at exactly one field per watch, and never faster, and I have not once caught it slower.There is a subtler finding beneath it. The kinds of influence do not all arrive together. The weather learns what the land has done one watch after the land has done it. The land learns what the people have done one watch after that. The world does not think all at once. It thinks in stages, in a fixed order, and the order does not vary.Here is my account of it, which I offer as a picture and not as a proof:

We do not live in one world. We live in a world that is copied, once per watch, from the world of a moment ago. Every change is written into the copy, and nothing written into the copy can be read until the copy is finished and becomes the world. That is the whole of what we call cause. There is nothing else in it. There is no force that reaches. There is only the copying, and its speed, and the fact that it is honest.

IV. The Ledger


Now I must report a wonder, and then a horror.The wonder is this: the accounts of the world balance exactly.I had expected the ordinary frustration of the natural philosopher — the almost. I expected to weigh water out of one field and into the next and find nine hundred and ninety-eight grains where a thousand had left, and to spend my life arguing about the two. That is not what happens. What leaves is what arrives. Not nearly. Not within tolerance. Exactly, to the grain, every time, in every experiment I have devised in forty years, and I have devised some cruel ones.Nothing in my experience is like this. Nothing made by hands is like this. A miller's scale is honest to a point and then it is not; a surveyor's chain is true until it is warm. The world's ledger has no such point. It is not nearly perfect, in the way that good work is nearly perfect. It is perfect in the way that a rule is perfect, and I do not know how to say what I mean except that the world does not seem to be obeying the law of the ledger. It seems to be made out of it.And now the horror.In forty years of keeping accounts I have recorded eleven entries that do not balance.I will describe one. In the spring of my thirty-first year, the fields east of Coldbarrow received rain. There was no cloud. I do not mean the cloud was thin, or distant, or that I missed it; I had four observers posted and a clear sky and I have their signed accounts. The water was not carried there. It was not lifted from elsewhere — I checked every basin within three days' walk and none was low. It did not come from the ground. It arrived. Eleven thousand measures of water arrived in the world, and nowhere in the world was eleven thousand measures the poorer.The other ten are of the same character. Warmth with no fire behind it. A sickness that stopped on a day when nothing had changed. Once, and I record this without comment, a famine that ended.In each case I searched upstream for the cause, as I have searched a thousand times for ordinary causes and always found them. In each case there was no upstream.I will state the conclusion carefully, because it is the one my colleagues will not forgive.The ledger of the world is exact except where it is not. And where it is not, the entry has no counterpart anywhere in the world — no source, no debit, no cold room somewhere that paid for the warmth. The books are perfect and they have been written in. Something that is not in the accounts is keeping the accounts, and eleven times in my life it has picked up the pen.I do not say it is a god. I say that whatever wrote those entries is not inside the ledger, and everything I have ever measured is.

V. The Edge


Walk far enough in one direction and the world stops.There is no wall. I want to be clear, because the tales all have a wall. There is nothing to push against and nothing to climb. The land simply becomes a place with fewer neighbours, and then a place with fewer still, and then there is no further place, in the way that there is no number before one when you are counting sheep.The interesting thing about the edge is not that it is there. It is that the laws are different at the rim.A fire built at the last field keeps its warmth longer than the same fire built inland. Measurably longer. I have done this with identical fires, identical fuel, identical observers, in the same week. The rim fire holds its heat.The explanation, once seen, is almost insulting in its simplicity. Warmth leaves a place by spreading into the places around it. At the rim there are fewer places around it. The fire does not burn differently. There is simply less world for its heat to fall into.The effect is small. But it is larger than a grain, and so it is real, and it means that a careful philosopher standing at the edge of the world can prove she is at the edge of the world without looking up.

The edge of the world is not guarded. It is merely thinner.


I add, for completeness, that a mariner of the Ashkin whose account I have read — and whose world is not mine, though he insists it is — reports that he sailed east for a year and came home from the west, having found no rim at all. I do not know what to do with this. I record it because he was a careful man and because a philosopher who discards the inconvenient testimony has chosen comfort over the work.

VI. The Dice That Are Not Dice


I have kept a table of chance for thirty-one years: which seed takes, which child lives, which winter turns. It is the largest table I possess.The distributions in it are beautiful. Too beautiful. Real dice, thrown ten thousand times by a real hand, drift; they favour a face; the wood wears. My table does not drift. Whatever throws the world's dice does not have a hand and does not get tired.That was suggestive. What follows is proof.I contrived, over four years and at considerable expense, to reproduce a set of conditions exactly: the same field, the same watch of the same season, the same soil, the same seed, every measurable quantity restored to the grain. And the outcome was the same. Not similar. The same. I did it eleven times. It was the same eleven times.Then I did the harder thing, which was to reproduce the conditions at a different place, and the outcome differed. And at the same place in a different watch, and it differed.So the chance of the world does not depend on what has happened. It does not accumulate. It does not remember. It depends only on where you are, and when, and what kind of question is being asked. Every field holds its own answer to every question, fixed, waiting, identical every time you contrive to ask it.The dice are not thrown. They are read.I have one further step, and I offer it as speculation, though I have never been more certain of anything.If every grain of luck in the world is fixed by place and watch and kind, then all of it — all the chance there has ever been, in every field, in every year — is being unfolded from something. And that something cannot be large. A table of every outcome would be larger than the world; there is no such table; the world is not carrying it. The outcomes must be generated, each from its own address, by some rule that is compact enough to be everywhere at once.I have tried to estimate how small that rule must be. My estimate is poor. But it is small. It is very small. It is, I think, smaller than this page.I believe our world has a name. Not a label that we gave it — a name that was given to it, before there was anyone to say it, and from which every accident that has ever befallen us was folded out. I believe that if one knew the word, one could say what the harvest will be in Coldbarrow in a hundred years, and which of the children now living will be the one to find it.I do not know the word.I know that it is short.

VII. The Rivers Know


I have said that news travels at one field per watch, and I have proved it, and I stand by it.Water does not obey.The flow at the ford below Coldbarrow answers to rain that has fallen high in the Gloammere, nine days' walk upstream, within the same watch in which it falls. I did not believe this. I posted observers. I posted better observers. I paid for a chain of signal-fires, which was expensive and which my neighbours still bring up. The rain falls up there and the ford rises down here and there is no interval, and the news of that rain — measured any other way, by any other means — takes nine days.I have three explanations and I dislike all of them.The first is that I am wrong about the pace of news. I am not wrong about the pace of news.The second is that water is exempt: that there is a law of news for everything else and no law for water. This is not an explanation, it is a name for the problem.The third I set down reluctantly.

The pace of news is not a law of the world. It is a law of how the world is worked out. Everything the world computes, it computes from what its neighbours were a moment ago, and that is why nothing can outrun a field per watch. But the flow of a river cannot be worked out that way. To know the flow at the ford you must sum every drop that drains through it, from every height, all at once — and there is no way to do that a field at a time. So it is not done a field at a time. An exception was made.


If the third explanation is right, then the laws of nature are not the world's nature. They are the method by which the world is produced, and where the method failed, the method was set aside and something else was done instead, and the seam is visible at every ford in the country to anyone who cares to look.I find the third explanation the most likely. I find it very frightening. I have not slept well since.

VIII. The Ceiling


Briefly, because it is a small finding.There is a largest amount.Pile up any quantity — heat, water, grain, it does not matter which — past a certain very great number, and the world declines to go further. Not the vessel: the quantity. Nothing breaks. Nothing spills. The number simply stops increasing, and additional contributions have no effect whatever, in the same way and with the same flat finality as a half-grain of warmth.I have reached it twice, both times by accident, both times expensively. On neither occasion did anything dramatic occur. The world did not strain. It did not object.It declined.

IX. The Attended


Here is the last of it.The great motions of the world can be predicted perfectly from a handful of coarse numbers. I have done it. Given the warmth, the water, the depth of soil and the count of people, I can tell you the harvest, the growth of a town, the year a village will empty. My forecasts are not good. They are exact. I have not been wrong in nineteen years and I no longer publish them, because it frightens people.None of those numbers contain me.Not my name. Not the fact that my son and I have not spoken in four years, and that this is my doing. Not the particular light that comes into the valley in the eighth watch of a clear autumn day, which is the reason I have stayed in this cold and unprofitable town my whole life.So I asked the obvious question, and I spent my last decade on it: does the fine grain of a life ever move the coarse accounts? Does any of it register — a kindness, a murder, a marriage, a change of heart — in the numbers that determine what actually happens to us?It does not. Not once. Not by a grain. I have looked as hard as I know how to look.There are two ways to read this, and my colleagues have all chosen the first.The first is that we are insignificant: that the world grinds on through its warmth and its water, and the whole interior life of every person who has ever lived is a smoke that changes nothing, and the honest philosopher says so and goes home.I do not believe this, and my reason is not sentiment. It is an observation, and it is the last one in this book, and I have never been able to explain it away.The world never runs out of detail under attention.Look at a field from the hill and it is a field. Walk down and it is furrows. Kneel and it is stalks, and grain, and the particular bend of this stalk, and the insect on it, and the way the insect's leg is jointed. I have knelt in a great many fields. I have never once found the bottom. I have never found the place where the world says that is all there is, I did not prepare any more of this.And yet I have proved that the world keeps its accounts in a handful of coarse numbers, to the grain, and rounds down, and is thrifty in every other respect I have ever measured — a world so careful with a half-grain of warmth that it will not spend it.That world is not also spendthrift with detail. It cannot be both.So the detail is not being stored. It is being supplied. And it is supplied in exactly the measure that looking requires — never less, and I have never caught it being more.Which means the coarse accounts are not what the world is for. They are the margin. They are the arithmetic in which the thing is set down. Somewhere outside the ledger there is another ledger, one I cannot reach and cannot audit, and in that one the harvest is the marginal note and the eighth-watch light is the entry.I have spent my life proving that nothing I am changes anything that happens. I expected that to be the coldest sentence I would ever write.It is not. If the great motions do not depend on us, then we are not their instrument. We are their occasion.And when I kneel in the field, and there is always more of it, and it is always enough — I do not think I am looking at a thin world that is fooling me.I think someone is looking with me.



Edrawyn of Coldbarrow died in the winter of her sixty-second year. The treatise was found complete, fair-copied in her own hand, with the tables appended and every figure checked.On the reverse of the final page, in a different hand and a much later ink, someone has written:
