Northanger Abbey isn't one of Jane Austen's better known novels. But it's a story about stories, and about choices, and it has a number of female characters who gave me some very confused feelings about wanting a different ending when I was reading the book for the first time as a repressed teen. Once I started thinking about making a queer interactive version it all came together pretty naturally, and I had a lot of fun playing around with Austen's prose, queering her characters, and taking credit for her jokes.
The first demo of Northanger Abbey was released on itch in 2017, and the first full version in 2019. But I was never entirely happy with it: the sprites were amateurish, and the side-routes stopped abruptly. Still, I loved seeing people play and enjoy it, and if you're one of those players I really appreciated the encouragement and advice, and would not have gotten this far without you all.
I've done various tweaks over the years, but it was when I started thinking about putting it on Steam that I decided it was time to put extra effort into making it as good as I can. The eyes aren't just dots any more! The side routes have endings! You can actually see the backgrounds instead of me hiding my art sins behind thick blobs of digital paint! I am very proud of myself and expect to be showered with money and praise.
Anyway: whether you're just discovering the game or have been watching it for years, welcome to Northanger Abbey, and I hope you enjoy your stay.
