Snacks are important to our studio. They don’t last long. Many hours were spent making sure the sweets and meats in NO LAW looked appetizing.
Instead of primarily referencing games, we look a lot at comics, anime, manga, movies and places we have actually visited. We also wanted NO LAW to avoid pure grimdark. Port Desire is violent and cynical, but there is humor, humanity, and warmth in there, too. We use things like time of day, weather, vegetation and district identity to give the city a broader emotional range than just “neon rain forever.”
Cyberpunk is not really “the future” anymore. It is science fiction from the 80s and 90s. We are embracing that. We like the comfort food side of it, but we try not to just echo other games. That said, we fully recognize that it would be blasphemous to ignore the humble ramen shops. That is the definition of cyberpunk comfort.
Because we’re so inspired by 80s/90s Cyberpunk, our version of the local authority needs to evoke that feeling. The immersion that comes from the phones ringing and messages chiming, citizens complaining at the front desk, the palpable stink of burnt coffee and smoke of spent cigarettes, and the aura that accompanies a healthy supply of fresh and frosted candy-coated donuts.
It has always been our intention to get our team to a flow state where they can be fully immersed in their work. This is how we’re able to produce a large amount of content and detail in a short amount of time and with a small team. One day, we realized that we needed to have a highly detailed donut stand, and so we built it. There’s a massive donut quota to fill at Peacekeeper HQ. Where are they getting them? We needed an answer.
Port Desire caters to more than just the fat and filthy looking for their next cheese-covered burger. Positioned between dilapidated apartment complexes for a premier view of the coastline, Cinders, a prix fixe temple serves the wealthiest in Port Desire. Five courses of reinvented delicacies and jeweled botanicals arrive plated on fine porcelain beneath gilded light, while a hand-selected sommelier breathes imported aromatics over finely crafted crystal. Only the top of Port Desire’s society will brave the bill (distributed upon exit only) and the charred cuisine burned beyond belief. Chef Dante pushes the absolute limits of good taste and good sense with his rotating menu of ashen delights.
