Portalborn — Custom Content Fixes

Hello everyone!

This update is mostly about Workshop-created content, including one fix that matters a great deal if you play in Chinese.

CUSTOM CONTENT WAS BEING MANGLED IN CHINESE

If you play in Chinese, anything you created in the Portal Workshop could have English words inside it automatically translated.

An item you named Shadow Dagger could display as Shadow匕首. A room called The Volcanic Merchant Outpost could become The火山Merchant Outpost.

Room descriptions were affected even more badly. Individual words inside your own writing could be replaced, leaving sentences that were part English, part Chinese, and properly readable in neither.

This is fixed, and fixed at the root. Text written by a player is now treated as authored content and excluded from automatic translation everywhere it appears.

Your names and writing stay exactly as you typed them, regardless of which language the game is running in. If you write your content in Chinese, the same rule applies — it won't be rewritten for players using English either.

Item names, room names, room descriptions, monster names, and NPC names are all covered.

WORKSHOP ITEM STATS

The forge now tells you what its numbers actually mean.

If you set Attack Power to 14, the preview now explains that this is the level 1 baseline and gives you a worked example: a level 20 buyer receives +280.

Nothing about the underlying item system has changed. Custom equipment has always scaled to the buyer's level, just like the game's own equipment. A level 20 character buying the Steel Broadsword gets the same scaling treatment.

The problem was that the forge never told you this, so the final numbers could come as a surprise.

Shop listings now show the scaled value as well, so what you see on the shelf is what you'll actually receive.

DELETING WORKSHOP ITEMS

Deleting a custom item now asks for confirmation first and tells you what will be affected, including which vendors stock it and whether any quests depend on it.

If a quest requires an item you delete, that quest is now disabled rather than being left in an impossible-to-complete state.

Your writing isn't destroyed. Re-adding the item restores the quest where it was.

Items that players already own are unaffected. They continue working, keep their stats, and now keep their original names in Chinese as well.

THE RETURN COMMAND

Standing beside a portal and typing return used to tell you there was no portal there.

It now recognizes the portal in the room, names it, and tells you how to use it.

The normal refusal message still appears when there genuinely isn't a portal present.

SMALLER THINGS

A stray internal label was printing in the terminal at startup. Gone.

Workshop merchant stock no longer runs out. Buying an item no longer removes it from the merchant's shelf.

Thank you all, and particularly to player Smile, whose reports drove most of this update.

One small personal note: I apologize for the less frequent updates this week. I unexpectedly had to move, which took away a bit of the time I normally spend working on Portalborn. Things are settling back down now, and I appreciate your patience in the meantime.

In-game event14 Sep 2026Portalborn: Turn the TideHello everyone! This update is focused almost entirely on combat — how much damage you take, how long your abilities actually last, and how your skills interact with an enemy's turn. There are also a number of interface and reliability fixes along the way. This change list is quite a bit heavier than normal. Several changes required other systems to change with them, and things snowballed from…Community12 Sep 2026Portalborn Development UpdateHello everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates over the last few days. I’ve reached a point that a lot of developers eventually hit where I have to admit: “just fast enough” is no longer fast enough. As Portalborn has grown, it naturally takes more time to build, test, and verify changes. The biggest slowdown lately has been my automated Playwright test suite. Before I push builds live, those te…Game update9 Sep 2026Portalborn — Window ControlsHello everyone! The follow-up to the last update, as promised. 🪟 WINDOW CONTROLS ARE BACK Windowed mode now has its own control bar at the top of the game, with minimise, maximise and close buttons. It's built in the game's own style, so it follows whichever theme you're using — including custom ones from the Theme Workshop. ⭐ It only appears in windowed mode. ⚠️ Borderless and fullscreen stay…
