This is the biggest update to Halls of Nyarlathotep so far.
The main addition is the new Rooms system, introducing 8 Challenge Rooms, 8 Lore Rooms and a new Perk system.
The Rooms system is here to stay. We plan to add more rooms as new biomes are introduced.
While exploring the mazes, you can now randomly come across strange doors leading outside the regular maze.
There are two types of rooms:
Challenge Rooms contain self-contained encounters, each built around its own rules and mechanics. Complete the challenge and you will be rewarded with a Perk.
Lore Rooms are focused on exploration and story, revealing more about both the world and the protagonist's past.
Hidden Chambers introduces 8 rooms of each type.
The challenges include avoiding the gaze of a giant spider, destroying an hourglass before it drives you insane, crawling through Mi-Go spaceship, escaping a pursuing Dhol aboard a subterranean boat, and more.
Each room works differently, and more will be added alongside future biomes.
Lore Rooms have no challenge to complete. They are places to explore, containing new events, memories, characters and pieces of lore.
The game now remembers which pieces of lore you have discovered, including lore found in the tutorial.
Completing a Challenge Room lets you choose a Perk.
Perks can change the way your current run plays. Some provide a direct advantage, while others offer stronger effects at a cost.
Perks can be recognized by the floating Trident of Nodens.
