Music Reveal & Bass Performance!

Hi everyone, and welcome to another Dandelion Void devlog. Today we have a special treat from our composer Catton Arthur!

Some of you might remember a previous post where Catton walked us through the dynamic audio tools he used to create Dandelion Void’s multilayer combat music. Today we’re showing off a brand-new track from Catton, which will play during our character creation menu. We call it “Autobiography.”

I’ll pass the mic over to Catton to say more about his piece:

“"This is a one-take performance of our character creation screen music. It's kind of a tough piece to pull off all at once without edits! I've always been interested in the open harmonics on a 6 string bass. They're like a secret, higher pitched melodic instrument hidden on top of the bass. I need to move my left hand around freely so I attach a strap to the butt end of the bass and sit on it to hold it in this more classical-guitar-style position.

This video's recording is a little bit different than the in-game track, but it was a physically interesting piece of music to create so I wanted to show how it's made. Enjoy!”

Thanks Catton!

I’ll pipe in to say that this instantly became one of my favorite pieces of music in the game. Like Dandelion Void’s setting, “Autobiography” is dark and moody with just a little glimmer of hope. It’s pensive but still has a strong sense of momentum, and it develops thematically over the course of the full runtime. This is especially important for the character creation context: many players will take a lot of time poring over all the different traits and physical attributes they can pick, so having a complex piece that holds up well to many consecutive listens is a must.

Dropping the Bass

Thanks for joining us for another peek into Dandelion Void. Until next time, everybody please take care and have a great week!
