Starlathe Will Launch in Ten Languages

Starlathe arrives on 1 October, and it will not arrive in English only.

Ten languages, all of them complete

  • English
  • کوردی سۆرانی — Kurdish Sorani
  • 简体中文 — Simplified Chinese
  • Русский — Russian
  • Deutsch — German
  • 日本語 — Japanese
  • ไทย — Thai
  • Español (España)
  • Español (Latinoamérica)
  • Português (Brasil)

This is not a menu translation. Every item, ship, module, weapon, skill, achievement, mission, officer, faction and sector carries its own name in your language, a few thousand of them. If you play Starlathe in Japanese, you are reading Japanese when you compare two guns in a shop at three in the morning.

You choose before anything loads

The first time you start the game you pick your language before a single asset loads. Every language names itself, in its own script and its own alphabet, so you can find yours without already being able to read the one on screen. Pick it once and you are never asked again.

Name your pilot in your own language

The pilot name field takes any language and any keyboard. Arabic, Kurdish, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, accented Latin, dead keys and IME input all work, and your name shows correctly everywhere it appears.

Kurdish Sorani, read the way it is written

Kurdish reads right to left, joins its letters into words, and mixes in English names and numbers that have to land on the correct side of a sentence. Very few games ship it at all. Starlathe does, properly shaped and properly ordered, down to the arrow that tells you which way to read a stat and its value.

Fixed along the way

  • Text is sharp everywhere instead of soft and smeared.
  • Labels and values no longer print on top of each other on the ship status panel, in tooltips, or in the pilot recap.
  • Text no longer spills out of buttons and panels in any language.
  • Accented letters no longer break Spanish, Portuguese and German headings in the middle of a word.
  • An enemy ship can no longer dock, repair and rearm at a station belonging to a faction it is at war with.
  • Vigil raiders are the white they are meant to be, not tinted green like a friendly patrol.
  • Text no longer stutters during play.

Not on the list yet

Ten is where this starts, not where it stops. We know what is missing. French, Korean, Polish, Turkish, Italian, Traditional Chinese and Ukrainian are all languages this game should eventually speak, and none of them are there today.

If one of those is yours, come and say so on Discord. Which one we do next depends on who asks for it.
