Weather

Weather has been reworked to have less of an impact on the game. It now primarily targets movement and should still feel impactful, but further tuning might be necessary. As a consequence of the waether changes all games will now start with 3 Power, no light rain 2 Power starts are possible anymore.

Olympian Curses

Some curses still were quite forceful on their lowest severity, this is explicitly how it is not supposed to work. When enough favor is accumulated, now all curse effects should really feel mild.

Patch Notes

Areteion v1.0.14

Features

  • Selecting a card on the board under any weather other than Sunny shows a hint above it stating that weather's effect.

  • End of game screen: next to Next Game there is now Modify Deck, which opens the deck you just played in the deck builder. Playing a Standard or Random deck shows Copy & Modify Deck instead, which saves a copy of that deck first; it only appears if you own every card in that deck.

  • Deck builder: an open deck now has Play Solo and Play Versus buttons that jump straight to that mode with the deck selected.

  • Windowed mode remembers the window size, position and maximized state, and restores them on the next launch. Minimum window size is 1024x640.

Balance

  • Gifts of Nature

    • Laurel Tree, Oak Tree, Poppies, Willow Tree, Garlic: buffs now only affect characters you control, and single-target ones always pick the highest Arete adjacent character.

  • Weather

    • Removed Light Rain. Medium Rain renamed to Rain.

    • Removed all round restrictions on weather: every weather can roll in any round, including round 1.

    • Roll weights: Rain 5% → 15%, Storm 3% → 5%, Heavy Storm 2% → 2.5%, Snow 3% → 5%, Heavy Snow 2% → 2.5%. Sunny 65% and Heavy Rain 5% unchanged.

    • Sunny: no effect (was +1 Power).

    • Rain / Heavy Rain: Start of turn, Movement of cards you control is reduced to 2 / 1. Movement gained later that turn is unaffected (was Power −1/−2).

    • Storm: Start of turn, Movement of cards you control is reduced to 2. After a card you control moves, deal 1 damage to it (was −1 Power and random tile blocking).

    • Heavy Storm: Start of turn, Movement of cards you control is reduced to 1. After a card you control moves, deal 2 damage to it (was −2 Power and random tile blocking).

    • Snow: Movement and fighting cost 1 Power (was −1 Movement and block Mountains).

    • Heavy Snow: Movement and fighting cost 2 Power. Start of turn: Block all Mountains (was −2 Movement and block Mountains).

  • Domus

    • Provided Might: 2 → 3, to offset the Power lost from Sunny weather no longer granting +1 Power.

  • Freezing Temperatures (Demeter)

    • Text: "Block all tiles with cards you control that have abilities" → "Block 1/3/5/7 random tile(s) with cards you control that have a function."

  • Heat Wave (Demeter)

    • Text: "Block all tiles with characters you control" → "Block 1/3/5/7 random tile(s) with characters you control."

  • Lost in the Wild (Artemis)

    • Text: "Block tiles not under any influence where you have cards" → "Block 1/3/5/7 random tile(s) not under any influence where you have cards."

  • Stormy Seas (Poseidon)

    • Text: "Cards you control on Sea or coast tiles" → "3/5/7/10 random card(s) you control with movement on Sea or coast tiles."

  • Plague (Apollo)

    • Text: now states that the plague chains to one random neighbouring character at a time, not to every neighbour. Mechanics unchanged.

  • Firestorm (Hephaestus)

    • Text: now states that the fire chains to one random neighbouring Structure at a time, not to every neighbour. Mechanics unchanged.

  • Volcanic Eruption (Hephaestus)

    • Adjacent tiles: always blocked. Damage 1/2/4/6 → 1/3/5/7.

    • Diagonal tiles: blocked only at the two harshest severities. Damage 1/2/4/6 → 0/2/3/5.

Bug Fixes

  • Enyo, Sacker of Cities: destroying adjacent Structures on play now grants Arete, same as destroying them in combat. Also fixes the same missing reward for Mares of Diomedes, Pankration, and Minotaur, Beast of the Labyrinth.

  • Fixed Atalanta, Huntress of Calydon failing to place Boars in Solo games.

  • Fixed random Invocations silently fizzling when the rolled card had no legal target, causing Dionysian Mysteries, Lenaia, Theatre of Dionysus, Temple of Dionysus, and Methe, Spirit of Drunkenness to play fewer Invocations than stated.

  • Dionysian Mysteries now counts itself when granting 7 Arete per Invocation played this turn.

  • Fixed a crash when an Olympian Effect's damage (e.g. Volcanic Eruption, Earthquake, Cataclysmic Tempest) destroyed a card.

  • The Olympian unlock confirmation and its Epic Hero card now appear right after you pick the Olympian, instead of after every other card reward from that match.

  • Card rewards no longer keep showing "Olympian unlock ready" once the unlock has been offered; they show the cards remaining until the next unlock again.

  • The Olympian choice popup now shows all three Olympians on one row instead of wrapping the third onto a second line.

  • The remaining deck list opened from your player panel now stays current: it updates as you draw and as cards leave or enter your deck.

Favor was the last piece still working the old way. Four separate counters were too many stats to track, and cancelling a curse was too difficult: it took enough Favor with whichever god got rolled, so in practice enough with all four at…Major update28 Aug 20261.0.17: Persistent Power, a Bigger Board, and the Hero's Journey RebuiltAreteion 1.0.17 Reasoning Areteion launched as a game of tight puzzles: every turn a tricky situation to survive, and the rules were constrained on purpose to keep that tension up. Your feedback since launch, in the reviews and on the forum, has been clear about the price of it: too much randomness, too much to keep in mind at once, and setbacks that hit far harder than the mistake deserved.
