The Paradox of the First 3 Seconds (And the Art of Wearing Many Hats)

One thing people don't often see about indie development is that making the game is only part of the job.

At first, we were handling the art direction and narrative by ourselves. Fortunately, Damian – a great artist and close friend – joined the project. Between the two of us, we wear a ridiculous number of hats every single day: character design, animation, backgrounds, UI/UX, VFX, art direction, and even guiding the overall direction of the soundtrack (which is being composed by the incredibly talented Maxi Morales).

But once we step away from the engine, there is a whole other beast waiting for us:

Marketing.

Trailers, promotional videos, social media posts, screenshots, store assets... the list never ends. And recently, we faced our biggest challenge yet: The Demo Trailer.

The Chess Paradox

While working on the trailer for our demo, we kept running into the same exact discussion. A trailer should truthfully represent the game, but today's social media algorithms demand something very specific: hook the viewer within the first 3 seconds, or die.

Think of it like a chess match:

If you show the checkmate in the first few seconds of a video, you've already played your strongest move. Everything that follows feels like a letdown. But if you build up the tension naturally, many people will swipe away before ever reaching that killer climax.

We felt that exact tension while editing. Do we throw the game's flashiest moments into your face immediately, or do we preserve the pacing that actually makes the experience enjoyable?

Here, you can see the FINAL version of our DEMO trailer:

If you wonder, how the previous one looked like, here you can see the old version:

And we are happy to share with you the old version BUT... with different soundtrack!

Beyond the Flashy Combos

Our goal was to find a rhythm. We wanted to give you enough of the story to explain why you're moving through this gritty underworld, while also introducing the card mechanics and keeping the edit engaging.

In the end, we were reasonably happy with the result. But we also walked away with a realization: a fast-paced trailer can't fully capture what makes Golden Caravan special.

Our game isn't just a sequence of flashing card combinations. It’s a living, breathing world filled with memorable characters, sharp narrative choices, original jazz-noir music, and a pace that asks you to sit down, pour a drink, and spend some time with it.

Play the Demo & Tell Us What You Think!

We made a game that rewards patience and strategy, even if the internet moves at 100 miles per hour.

If you haven't already, grab your deck and try the free Golden Caravan demo right now on Steam!

Does the trailer match your experience with the demo? Let us know in the comments below – your feedback means the world to our team.

Keep your poker face strong,

The Golden Caravan Team
