We want to give you a little dip into the game’s mechanics and tell you how they are intertwined with the main theme and philosophy. That’s gonna be a series of brief posts about different aspects of DOPROS. And today, we will tell you about the mini-games idea in general, and the Avoid segment in particular.
Mini-games appear when the player has to answer some tricky questions. For example, when you reject an "opportunity" to confess, the Interagator goes, "Are you aware that false testimony is a felony?" You can go the easy way and just say, “I am now”, which allows the Interrogator to push you further to confess, as you kind of admitted that you could give some "false testimony" before.
But you could also reply, "I am aware, but I'm not lying!"
This line won’t make the officer happy, and you gotta be really convincing, cause if they won’t buy it, you are screwed. Such persuasion checks are embodied in mini-games.
The AVOID mini-game
Mini-games portray that brief adrenaline-pumping moment of one trying to be convincing, while any wrong tone or move will tell that they lack sincerity. And when it comes to a matter of freedom, it becomes even more intense.
Also, mini-games depict a vision of how Dough (the protagonist) sees the pressure. Avoid is one of those visions. Imagine that someone is all out to catch you on lies and is trying to overwhelm you with some nonsense just to lower your concentration and to make you slip when they need you to. So you have to avoid those walls of gibberish, just to stay focused and be convincing.
So yeah, that mini-game is not just about high-speed avoidance of the obstacles, but a depiction of mental efforts to avoid exposure.
