Hey, MINI here. Outflow Alpha v0.3.0 is up on the Playtest: your own worlds, friends joining straight from Steam, scopes you can actually see through, and a big vehicle overhaul. A lot of this came straight out of the 15 October playtest, so thanks to everyone who played and reported.
Highlights
- Your own worlds: a new Worlds window in the lobby. Keep several worlds, each with its own seed and progress. Use a number or any word as the seed, or roll a random one. Your existing save becomes "The Wasteland".
- Play with friends through Steam: your lobby is now a friends-only Steam lobby for up to 4 players. Invite from the Steam overlay or the lobby, or use "Join Game" on a friend's name. Nobody has to open ports.
- Scopes you can see through: every scope shows a magnified view through its own lens, with the reticle on the exact point your shot lands. Seven optics, each with its own magnification.
- Bolt-action feel: the bolt rifle works its bolt after every shot, from the hip or scoped, without pressing a key.
- Every seat counts: every seat in every car and helicopter is placed and tested with a real player. The Metal heli seats 8, the Greaser 4, and the Tumbler has a chair on its roof.
- Emote wheel: wave, point, come here, salute, cheer, clap, confused, dance and sit.
- Audio settings: volume sliders for Master, Music, Effects, Zombies, Voices, Ambience and Interface.
Bug fixes
- Drivers and passengers sat under cars, through roofs or inside seats. Everyone now sits properly, facing forward, drivers with their hands on the wheel.
- Cars stayed level on dunes and ramps, barely turned unless you accelerated, and got flung into the air by collisions. They now tilt with the ground, turn properly and stay down.
- Every gun's sights now line up with where the bullet lands, and scopes no longer float, clip or zoom on their own.
- The map no longer resizes when you scroll off it, runs smoothly with both layers on, and shows the terrain at more zoom levels.
- Doors, garage doors, window bars and shutters snap into their frames. Placed chests start empty. Loot sits on furniture instead of sinking into it.
- Helicopter rotors spin for everyone, and engines no longer go silent above 110 km/h.
Balance and changes
- Twice as many towns per world by default. Settings for world and server owners to tune this are on the way.
- Nights are darker: the sun, moon and night sky are about half as bright.
- Getting hit by a car knocks you down instead of killing you outright.
- Cars burn fuel 10 times slower. Zombies are 6 dB quieter in the mix.
Server wipe
The EU-1 server has been wiped for this update. Everyone starts fresh.
Known issues
- Zombie hits on players are unreliable on dedicated servers.

Full changelog: v0.3.0
Worlds, friends and a vehicle overhaul
Your own worlds with your own seeds, friends joining you straight from Steam, and a long list of vehicle, audio and building fixes from the 15 October playtest session.
New
- Worlds. A WORLDS window in the lobby: keep several worlds, each with its own seed and progress. Create a world from a number or any word as its seed, or roll a random one; rename, copy the seed, or delete. Pick the world you host before pressing Start Game. Your existing save becomes "The Wasteland".
- Play with friends through Steam. Your lobby is now a friends-only Steam lobby for up to 4 players. Invite friends from the Steam overlay or the lobby's friends list, or they can use "Join Game" on your name. They join your lobby and follow you into your world, connected through Steam, so nobody has to open ports.
- Join Discord and Send Logs buttons in the lobby. Send Logs uploads your game logs straight to the team, so bug reports come with what we need to fix them.
- Audio settings. Volume sliders for Master, Music, Effects, Zombies, Voices, Ambience and Interface in the options menu.
- Tyre screech when sliding, using the handbrake or spinning the wheels.
- Gunshots carry. Guns have close and distant sounds and can be heard up to 1.2 km away.
- Admin stealth mode. Admins can go invisible: hidden from everyone and off the map.
- Every seat counts. Each car takes as many people as it has seats: Greaser 4; Road Hog and Roadkill 3; Chopper, Diesel, Firefly, Mayfly, Reaper, The Count and Tumbler 2 (the Tumbler's second seat is the chair on the roof); Scream Roller 1. The Metal helicopter seats 8 (pilot, co-pilot, two door gunners and four passengers). Seats fill front to back.
- New loading screen art.
- Scopes you can see through. Magnified scopes now show a magnified picture-in-picture view through the lens, with the reticle on the exact point your shot lands. Each optic has its own magnification.
- More towns. Twice as many towns per world by default, from cities down to small hearths.
- Getting hit by a car knocks you down instead of killing you outright: you ragdoll, take damage based on speed, and get back up.
- Bolt-action rifle and pump shotgun shots now cycle with a bolt or pump sound.
- Easier looting. You no longer have to aim exactly at an item to pick it up; looking near it is enough.
- Emote wheel. Wave, point, come here, salute, cheer, clap, confused, dance and sit.
- The bolt rifle works its bolt after every shot, from the hip or scoped, with no key press. The scope drops while the bolt cycles and comes back after.
Fixed
- Drivers and passengers sat in the wrong place in almost every car and helicopter: under the car, through the roof, or inside the seat. Every seat is now placed on the vehicle's own seat.
- Cars stayed level going up dunes and ramps instead of tilting with the ground. They now follow the slope and can climb steeper hills.
- Riding as a passenger in a car or helicopter was very laggy and jittery.
- Helicopter rotors didn't spin for other players.
- Car engines went silent above about 110 km/h.
- Doors, garage doors, window bars and shutters didn't snap into their door and window frames.
- The Standing Torch looked like an Uzi when held.
- Zombies kept attacking dead bandits.
- Damage numbers showed for hits that weren't yours.
- The admin menu only listed yourself, not the other players on the server.
- Admin fly mode did nothing.
- In big vehicles the camera was too close and the back of the vehicle blocked the view.
- Drivers sat sideways in first person and halfway out of the car in third person. Drivers and passengers now sit properly in every car and helicopter, facing forward: drivers with their hands on the wheel, passengers with their hands in their laps, door gunners holding their gun.
- Tyres screeched during normal driving. They now only screech when sliding, spinning or using the handbrake.
- Shooting scrap piles from a helicopter harvested them. Only melee and fists harvest scrap now.
- Helicopter gunners couldn't see where they were aiming through their own muzzle flash.
- Aiming down sights: the sights of every gun and attachment now line up with where the bullet lands.
- Scopes zoomed in and out on their own while aiming.
- Scopes and attachments were badly scaled, floated off the gun or clipped through your head.
- The Bolt Rifle fired like an automatic. Guns have been retuned for fire rate and feel.
- A test item ("hello world") could be crafted. It's gone.
- Building pieces came in two near-identical versions (A and B); each piece now has one. Every item has a proper name ("Scrap Wall", not "ScrapWallA").
- Placed storage chests started with loot in them. They're empty now. The old Wooden Box is retired.
- Some loot containers in towns and monuments were always empty.
- Loot spawned sunk into shelves, tables and sinks. It now sits on top of the furniture.
- Scrolling the mouse wheel off the map resized the whole map screen. The map stays the same size and the wheel zooms it.
- Some guns in your own hands sounded like distant gunfire. Every gun now has a close, punchy shot up close and the distant report only far away.
- Cars got stuck on, or bounced up, the highway ramps. Ramps are longer and gentler and cars drive up them smoothly.
- Cars barely turned unless you were accelerating, and lifting off the throttle stopped them dead.
- Vehicles were flung into the air by collisions, and getting out of a helicopter could launch it. Players no longer push vehicles around, and can't walk through them either.
- The horde played only a handful of hurt and death sounds instead of its full set of voices.
- The map ran slowly with both layers on and hid the terrain at mid zoom.
- The bolt rifle's muzzle flash didn't come out of the barrel.
- In third person the crosshair stayed on screen while aiming down sights.
- Linux: on Wayland desktops the main menu didn't respond to clicks.
Changed
- Cars burn fuel 10 times slower.
- Nights are darker: the sun, moon and night sky light are about half as bright.
- Zombies are 6 dB quieter in the mix.
Known issues
- Zombie hits on players are unreliable on dedicated servers.
