Tested on Steam Deck: Full Controller Support and New Radial Menus

I've been playing Ashburrow on a Steam Deck, and I'm happy to say it works out of the box. No community layout to hunt down, no settings to change first: install it, press play, and you're in the burrow.

What you get on the Deck

  • A graphics preset built for it. The game support the Steam Deck's native 1280x800 screen resolution.

  • A controller layout that ships with the game. Every action has a button from the first moment, and you can remap anything in Steam's controller configurator.

  • The right buttons on screen. Prompts show your controller's own buttons, whether that's a Deck, an Xbox pad, a DualSense or a Switch Pro.

  • Every menu works with a controller. Character creation, the upgrade tree, merchants, the options and quitting the game. A gold ring shows where you are, and A presses.

  • An on-screen keyboard comes up for naming your character and for chat.

New: the rose window

Press the View button and a rose window of stained glass opens over the world. It has a pane for each of your screens: Inventory, Spellbook, Skills, Map, Chat and Options.

  • Hold and flick: hold View, push a stick toward a pane and let go. It opens.

  • Or tap: tap View and it stays open. Point at a pane and press A, or press B to close it.

With one of your screens open, the bumpers step between Inventory, Spellbook, Skills and Map, so you can check your bags and then go straight to your spells.

New: the rune wheel, for casters

Magic on a controller now works as well as it does on a keyboard. If your class casts spells, hold the right bumper and your eight runes form a wheel. Point the right stick at a spell and let go to cast it at your target.

  • It doesn't stop the fight. The left stick still walks and the triggers still swing and block, so you can step back, raise a shield and cast in the same breath.

  • A quick tap of the bumper still targets what you're aiming at, the same as always.

  • Your target stays where you put it. Pick an ally, hold the bumper, and you heal that ally even if your aim has drifted onto a gnoll.

Default controls

  • Right trigger attack, left trigger block

  • A interact and loot, B target, X jump, Y greet

  • Left bumper sprint (hold)

  • Right bumper target what you're aiming at; hold for the rune wheel if you cast

  • D-pad abilities

  • View rose window, Start options

If anything feels wrong on your Deck or your controller, please tell me in the discussions. See you in the burrow.

It is called Cinderscar, it is built for a character of about level 10, and it is in the free demo. One way in A track leaves the back of the keep's yard and climbs to a notch cut through the ridge.
