Hey everyone!
Here's another development update for FD's Industry Tycoon. This one is all about subsidiaries and the stock market.
FD's Industry Tycoon is a management sim about growing a small company into a global giant. But in the real world, big businesses are rarely a single company. They run entire networks of affiliates through ownership stakes and issue new shares when they need capital, all without giving up control.
So we've added share issuance and buybacks, subsidiaries, and trading from multiple accounts, plus a new Holdings tab. Now you can build your own corporate group, one stake at a time.
You now decide how many shares your company has. Need cash? Use [Issue Shares] to put new stock on the market. Have money to spare? Use [Buy Back] to take shares back off the market.
Issuing shares lets you raise money without taking out a loan. Market demand sets the price, and before you commit, you can see exactly how much you'll raise and what your stake will be afterward. Flood the market with too many shares at once, though, and you'll have to wait for it to absorb them before you can issue more.
Of course, that money isn't free. You pay for it with ownership, because every new share dilutes your stake. As long as the founder holds more than a third of the shares, no one can force a merger. Fall below that line, and a rival can buy up shares and take your company out from under you.
Buybacks do the opposite. Shares you buy back are removed from the market, so your stake goes back up and every remaining share earns a bigger dividend. Once your finances are in good shape, buybacks are a great way to tighten your grip on the company.
There are two ways to get a subsidiary:
Buy more than half of another company's shares. A full merger takes 66.7%, but a simple majority is enough to make it your subsidiary.
Spin off part of your own business. In the My Company window, go to the Company Profile tab and open [Spin Off Subsidiary]. Choose the buildings and the amount of cash to transfer, give the new company a name and a logo, and you'll own 100% of a brand-new subsidiary.
Either way, you don't run a subsidiary directly. It manages its own business, and you hold the shares. You can still steer it with directives: ban new construction, limit it to certain building types, or restrict it to specific products. You also decide how much of its profit is paid out as dividends.
This lets you run your group like a holding company. Your main company can focus on the products you care about most, while other product lines are spun off to grow on their own. Collect dividends from the companies under you, buy or sell their shares, and even use a subsidiary's money to invest in other companies.
You can now trade stocks not only from your company's account, but also from your CEO's personal account or any subsidiary's account. Your company, your CEO, and your subsidiaries are lined up side by side with their logos and portraits at the top of the Stock Market window, so you can choose which account makes each trade.
Which account you use matters. Shares bought with company money become company assets and count toward acquisitions. Shares bought with the CEO's own money don't count toward acquisitions, but they stay part of the CEO's personal wealth. One restriction: a subsidiary can't buy shares in its parent company, and other loopholes that would funnel a subsidiary's cash directly to its parent are blocked too.
We've also added a [Holdings] tab that shows everything the selected account owns at a glance: shares held, average purchase price, current value, profit or loss, and return. Long and short positions appear together in the same list.
We'll keep refining the market economy to make it even more dynamic. A huge thank you to everyone who joined our two Playtests! Next up is the demo, which we're aiming to release in December.
Let us know what you think in the comments, in the Steam discussions, or on Discord. And be sure to wishlist and follow the game so you don't miss any news about the demo!
Thank you!
Best,
