Dev Talk: The Ancient Lands

The Dragonfire update, launching August 31, expands Albion with new places to explore, powerful enemies to fight, exciting rewards to earn, and, most importantly, Dragons. One of the update’s biggest new features is the Ancient Lands: a completely new region combining exploration, PvE, and PvP with meaningful decision-making.

In this Dev Talk, Co-Creative Director Michael Schwahn, Game Designer Marco Nogielsky, and Environment Artist Johannes Geier present the mechanics, visual design, and atmosphere of this brand-new area.

Entering the Ancient Lands

Portals to the Ancient Lands appear throughout the open world, with different portal sizes accommodating different party sizes.

  • Small portals are intended for solo players and small groups
    • These portals appear with very little warning, allowing spontaneous expeditions

  • Large portals support parties of up to 20 players

    • These portals are announced in advance, providing organized PvP content for larger groups

  • Within each portal size, parties are matched with groups of similar sizes

    • A solo player, for example, will not suddenly face a full five-player party

The type of PvP inside depends on where the portal appears:

  • Portals in the Outlands and Red Zones lead to a lethal PvP version of the Ancient Lands
  • Portals in Yellow Zones lead to a non-lethal Orange Zone version

Traversing the Islands

Once inside, each party begins on its own floating island at the outer edge of the region, initially separated from all other groups. To progress through the Ancient Lands, players must first defeat Keeper mobs to complete Fame objectives.

  • Completing the island quest causes a Keystone to appear
  • The Keystone can be used to activate one of the island’s teleporters, opening a route to a neighboring island
    • Activated teleporters can be used by every group
    • Keystones can be moved between teleporters to redirect the available routes

The Minimap can be used to distinguish between inactive, newly activated, and established connections

  • Each new route expands the possibilities for travel while making rival groups harder to track and encounters more likely
  • This shifting network makes map awareness and control over movement an important part of every expedition

Players can extract their loot and leave through any entrance portal.

  • The party returns to their original entry point in the open world, temporarily protected and invisible

Drake Objectives

Four Drake islands are marked on the Minimap. These contain some of the best rewards available in the Ancient Lands, including:

  • Treasure Chests
  • Dragon Blood
  • Spirit Waystone Fragments
    • These help unlock access to the Dragon Sanctuary

Once all four Drakes have been defeated, the Fire Drake appears at the center of the region:

  • The Fire Drake protects the Ancient Lands’ largest reward
  • Defeating it can provide complete Spirit Waystones

Parties are incentivized to proactively repel rivals, dominate key territory, and seize objectives before competitors can intervene.

Bleedout

Inevitably, group battles occur that can leave players behind even when their party ultimately wins. To give groups an opportunity to recover, a new Bleedout knockdown state has been introduced in the Ancient Lands.

  • This exists in both Orange Zone and Black Zone variants
  • Defeated players weaken over time, but can hold out longer while their party remains nearby
  • Allies can revive them, although revived players receive a debuff that lasts for the rest of their time in the region

This gives groups a chance to recover after contested fights, but repeated losses still carry a lasting cost.

Art and Environment

The Ancient Lands are a hidden, magic-saturated realm of shattered floating islands, once home to the ancient Keepers and Dragons.

  • Streams of concentrated magic flow through the air, while megalithic gates, ritual statues, and ancient channeling structures reveal the remains of a powerful Keeper civilization
  • At the center stands a grand temple built both to honor and control the Dragons, which the Keepers eventually put to sleep through powerful rituals
  • The environment balances natural beauty with constant danger, from flower-covered meadows to unforgiving wilderness
  • Distinct areas include swamps with lakes and waterfalls, woodlands dominated by enormous trees, and landscapes filled with the remains of giant creatures

The Ancient Lands have been designed as a unique addition to Albion, from the way players explore the region and interact with its mechanics to its creatures, visual identity, and atmosphere.

But this is only one part of Dragonfire. The next Dev Talk will take a closer look at the Dragon Sanctuary and the battle against Azaryon, Dragon Attacks across Albion, the new Dragon Armor, and the other rewards coming with the update. Stay tuned!
