Dangerous, rebuilt - what was broken and what got fixed

Dangerous launched here in December 2014 and then sat on that exact build for eleven years. This update replaces it. Here is what was broken and what was done about it, plainly.

Combat

Enemies vanished mid-fight, and vanished again on the far side of a warp jump. Those turned out to be two unrelated root causes; both are fixed. Missiles dealt zero damage on impact because of a null reference - the entire missile line was dead, for years, and nobody caught it. Fixed. The plasma beam shader has been rewritten so laser bolts are actually visible when they fire.

Cloud saves

The login backend was down for 105 days straight, and before that its TLS certificate had expired, so clients that could reach it refused the connection anyway. The server has been rebuilt: login contract corrected, real authentication, a valid certificate, and it runs under systemd now so it restarts itself instead of quietly staying dark. Local saves - four manual slots and an autosave - never depended on it.

Interface

The UI was laid out for 2014 screens and never revisited. High-DPI displays made the text unreadably small and the HUD did not scale with resolution. That is rebuilt: proper high-DPI and resolution-change handling, scaling fonts, safe-area support for notched screens, and radar and target indicators that scale with everything else.

Translations

All 17 non-English languages were machine translation from around 2013, and several had broken string placeholders. Every one has been retranslated and repaired. That covers 251 dialogue scenes and roughly 33,000 words in each language.

Engine

The whole game moved from Unity 5 to Unity 2022.3, 64-bit, with the mobile build compiling again for the first time in about a decade.

What is actually in the box

For anyone deciding whether it is worth the reinstall:

  • 33 star systems on one fixed galaxy seed, with over 200 stations
  • 22 flyable hulls, 320 modules and 240 ammunition types across three damage types
  • 48 trainable skills
  • Six recruitable wingmates with their own quests and conversation arcs
  • 15 factions with loyalty missions
  • A 14-chapter campaign whose final battle calls in allied capital ships based on the standings you built over the whole playthrough
  • A fleet layer under the trade and mining loop: hire AI pilots, program their routes, and let them run while you fly somewhere else

What has not changed

The control scheme is still the 2014 one, and the reviews on this page that call it out are right. Flight is mouse and keyboard or touch, weapons fire on Right Shift (or Space once a target is locked), and keys are not rebindable. Nothing in this update changes that, and I am not going to dress it up as if it did.

No IAP, no ads, no season pass. There never were any.

If you bounced off the old build, this is a different one.
