Why Pinecone Grove Exists

When we talk about what motivates me to work on Pinecone Grove, we need to talk about why I founded Quality Time Studio in the first place and the philosophy behind it.Let’s start with the bigger picture. From my personal perspective (and this is purely subjective), the world feels like it is in a rather chaotic state. The number of stress factors we are exposed to is huge: wars, extreme weather events, geopolitical tensions, a decline in social behavior, all amplified by social media. As a result, I feel that the general level of mental stress has increased in recent years. Now let’s look at the smaller picture: everyday life.As a father with young children, balancing household and family responsibilities while working in a demanding and fast-changing gaming industry can be intense. It requires a lot of agility and can, ultimately, lead to stressful situations as well. All of this combined creates a desire. When I dive into gaming worlds, which has obviously been my hobby since I was a kid and still is, I want to find relaxation. I want to have some "quality time".A peaceful experience without stress, where I can be creative and have a positive impact on the world. Something that, in real life, can sometimes feel impossible given the scale of the global problems humanity is facing. And I guess I’m not the only one looking for this kind of digital retreat. Cozy games have become increasingly popular over the years, and I think there is a reason for that.So when I started Quality Time Studio, I put it right there in the name: I want to create games that give players a positive, relaxing experience. A true moment of quality time. And that is exactly what Pinecone Grove stands for.

A Different Kind of Farming RPG

Like many players, I love Stardew Valley. But my passion for Farming RPGs actually started much earlier with Harvest Moon. I spent countless hours playing Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town on the Game Boy Advance, and I still have very fond memories of it.But one thing has always struck me about Farming RPGs: they tend to focus heavily on economic loops. You plant something, grow and harvest it, and then you put it into a box and get money.I understand the game loop. I understand economic optimization as a motivational factor, as well as the resource and source-sink logic behind it all.But there was always something that puzzled me: In real life, when I plant something, my motivation is completely different. When I plant something, I immediately see the positive effect of my action. There is a beautiful plant where there was none before. I can visit it every day, see it grow, and observe how it changes the environment around it. That is deeply satisfying and it has nothing to do with economic motivation. If you have a balcony or a garden, you might know exactly what I mean.

Bringing Nature Back

So even though Pinecone Grove will be a Farming RPG with economic elements, you can still buy and sell things, the main motivation for planting is different. It is about re-naturing the world around you.Every tree the player plants will start growing and have a positive effect on the harsh and desolate game world, gradually bringing nature back. And the player’s actions won’t only affect the limited area of their farm.In Pinecone Grove, your farm is actually a tree nursery, and from there, your impact can gradually spread across large parts of the world itself. By adding more plant diversity, players might attract animals that return to the regrowing world. You can try to photograph them to fill your animal lexicon and maybe even manage to “catch them all”. 😉In this way, you will create your own version of the world: a flourishing landscape with a lively ecosystem shaped by your actions. Of course, Pinecone Grove will also feature a cozy town with quirky characters, decorative elements, farm optimization, and a beautiful world filled with secrets and mysteries to uncover. But I don’t want to spoil too much just yet. We can dive deeper into these systems in future dev blogs.

Why Pinecone Grove?

For me, the idea behind Pinecone Grove, which I’ve had in mind for quite some time, fits perfectly as the first game of Quality Time Studio. It combines many of the things I personally love about games: exploration, creativity, progression, collecting, cozy characters, and the satisfaction of watching a world change because of your actions. But most importantly, it is built around the idea of creating a peaceful place to spend some quality time. I hope Pinecone Grove will resonate with players who share a love for this kind of experience. This is just the beginning of the journey, and I’m looking forward to sharing more about the game, its world, and its systems with you here on Steam.Until then, I wish you all the best and happy growing! 🌱
