Why 1776?

Con Here.

It's been a minute! If you've been following the Warfare series, you know we've spent a lot of time in the muddy trenches of 1917 and the beaches of 1944. We love those games and the time period, but when we sat down to figure out where to take the series next, we knew we wanted to step out of the World War era and build something that felt new and different; but also similar.

So, why 1776?

First off, we definitely still wanted an era with firepower; what is a Warfare game without gunpowder? Linear warfare has been long suggested for the Warfare series and we knew it would work great from the earliest prototype. With more soldiers on the field, more lanes, and changing battlefields that affect the course of battles, the era is a perfect fit. We also loved the idea of trading heavy tanks for field cannon and cavalry charges.

Inspiration

I’ve spent the last year learning as much as I can about the American Revolutionary War. I drew a lot of inspiration from books, movies, documentaries, and video essays. Also TV shows like John Adams and Turn: Washington’s Spies which really capture the tension, the shifting loyalties, and the gritty reality of the era have been amazing. It’s a fascinating period in history and it's making for an incredible, messy, tactical sandbox.

Factions

We’ve had some questions about representation of certain factions like the French, Native American allies, and Hessians and I can assure you that you will see them as you move through the colonies. On that note, we’re shooting for historical accuracy where we can, but at the same time we really want the history of the period to be accessible so that people are inspired to learn more about it themselves.

The game will feature two full sandbox campaigns, letting you choose between the Continental Army or the British Empire. That means you're getting two distinct strategic experiences depending on whose boots you're filling. As the Continentals you will travel the colonies raising manpower and munitions to skirmish and fight your way to independence. As the British you’ll do your best to maintain control and squash the rebellion where you can and bring loyalty back to the Crown.

Teamwork

But, I'm not doing this alone. I'm thrilled to be teaming up with Daniel Stradwick (the mastermind behind the Monsters' Den franchise). With his vast knowledge of RPG mechanics and deep tactical design, we've been able to dial up the strategy and customization. We wanted to make sure Warfare 1776 kept that classic, addictive "Tug of War" excitement you know and love, but we also want to bring more depth, where every single flanking choice and troop placement matters. We're incredibly excited to share this new chapter with you. It's the Warfare you remember, just with more depth, customization, and tricorn hats and a little less trench foot.

20k!

We have been blown away by the response since we announced the game last week and can't quite believe we have already hit over 20,000 wishlists. It means so much that you guys are as excited about this as we are!

Before I sign off, we'd love to hear from you:

  • Which campaign are you planning to jump into first?

  • What classic Revolutionary War battle are you most excited to play out?

Let us know in the comments below, and make sure to hit that Wishlist button and follow along on our development journey. We've got a lot more to show you in the coming weeks!Con
