Hello Backrooms Fans!

Thanks so much for the great response to our first devlog!

Since then, we’ve been hard at work on the game and adding new features.

Now, we want to share some of the latest things we’ve been working on. New ways to survive, new dangers to face, and changes that should make exploring the Backrooms even more intense.

Let’s dive into what’s new!

Watch Your Breath: Toxic Zones & Gas Masks

Now, running from whatever is after you isn’t your only concern. Some places are now filled with toxic gas, and going in without protection is a bad idea. You’ll need a Gas Mask to explore these spots. But be careful… The filters run out, so you’ll need to watch how much time you have left.

We’ve added some details to make wearing the mask feel more real. Your vision gets limited, you’ll hear your character breathing, and the visor can slowly fog up. It might seem like a small thing, but when you’re already lost, having your vision blocked by your own breath makes things even harder.

You’ll Feel It: Dynamic Damage Feedback

We also wanted it to be more obvious when your character gets hurt.

Now, instead of just watching a health bar drop, your character reacts to what’s happening in real time.
As your health and stamina get lower, you’ll notice things like blurred vision, glitchy HUD elements, and heavier breathing. That heavy breathing can even help nearby threats find you.

The idea is simple.
You shouldn’t have to keep checking the UI to know you’re in trouble; your character will make it clear.

Coming Back Isn't Simple: New Respawn System

We’ve also been building a new respawn system that fits the game’s co-op style

We don’t want to spoil the details yet, but bringing a teammate back won’t be as simple as pressing a button and waiting. You’ll need to work together, time things right, and take some risks to bring someone back.

We’re still tweaking the system, but we’re excited about how it fits into co-op play so far.

Level 3: Darker, Stranger, and More Dangerous

We’re excited to share that Level 3’s environment design is finished!

Level 3 is much more industrial and mechanical than the areas you’ve seen before. It’s also a lot more claustrophobic, as if the Backrooms weren’t already uncomfortable. But getting through the level isn’t just about finding your way.

We’ve added environmental puzzles for you and your teammates to solve as you move forward. You’ll need to watch your surroundings and work together to get through...

What's Waiting Deeper Down?

Before we wrap up, here’s a quick warning.

While testing Level 3, our scanners found a strange sound coming from one of the deeper areas.

The recording is mostly static, but there’s one thing we’re pretty sure of...

Something down there is really, really big.

We won’t say more for now. You’ll have to discover it yourselves.

Until then, stay alert, keep an eye on your filters, and don’t get lost.

Remember to add Escape Protocol Online to your wishlist!

Thanks for following our progress and for all your feedback. It really helps us choose what to work on next.

See you in the next devlog!

-Buben
