Kung Foot was a much-loved football side game mode that was part of the original Rayman Legends.
When reimagining the game, we also wondered (not for long) what a newer and revamped Kung Foot could look like!
In today’s blog, we are going to take some time to look back at what the original mode was and how we are planning to take things further in Kung Foot Evo!
The original mode was designed to be an instantly fun game mode that was easy to pick-up. It was a perfect mini game to casually have a laugh with friends, for a match or two (or the whole night!). However, while the gameplay was chaotic and gratifying, it was more built for frantic opponent-slapping matches rather than team-play and ball control. With Rayman Legends Retold, we are improving the formula and taking things to the next level!
Kung Foot Evo will be the continuation of the original game mode, but with additional strategic opportunities, more in-depth gameplay, and many more customization options. Our goal is to expand the variety of situations and options available to players so that every match feels fresh and full of possibilities.
In addition to being able to shoot the ball in any direction, one of the core changes coming with Kung Foot Evo, is the capability to carry the ball. This will allow players to have greater control over the pacing of the game, but also to take advantage of a more advanced level -design.
Kung Foot Evo arenas are substantially larger, but we are also expanding in terms of verticality. We want to steer away from the chaotic pace of the original mode while retaining the essence and optimizing it for 2v2. Expanding the arenas vertically, combined with improved ball control, gives players more space to bypass the defending team, while creating additional tactical options. We want to push players to use the entire space available on screen and allow for more constructed gameplay.
Another key feature added to Kung Foot Evo is the passing system.
You will now be able to pass the ball directly to your teammate to go around the defenders and take advantage of a teammate in a better position.
This element is quite central to the new game mode and will allow for more off-the-ball gameplay. Players will also have the possibility to ask for a pass! (We all have that friend and their famous tunnel-vision). Thanks to this new feature, we expect you to score many impressive-looking volleys and alley-oops!
To spice things up even more and to retain part of the chaotic element that made Kung Foot so fun to play, we are also introducing power-ups! Whether they affect the whole arena or provide a temporary bonus to a team, they will change certain parameters to create a wider range of situations and opportunities. These power-ups will also be used to allow players who are trailing behind to get a chance to come back into the game and still enjoy themselves.
A full break-down of those power-ups will be made available later, so stay tuned!
We all have our preferences, and it is important to let players tailor their own experiences. The updated mode offers a variety of customizable options, ranging from: ending conditions, scoring system, type of ball, friendly fire, etc.
Finally, playing more Kung Foot Evo will progressively unlock more options. This will help players to get familiar with the various gameplay elements, while progressively introducing gameplay modifiers.
We cannot wait for you to get your hands on Kung Foot Evo and enjoy it with friends in couch- co-op. The team here is literally fighting to get a chance to grab a pad during our testing sessions and we suspect that it’s a great sign! We hope you’ll enjoy playing this as much as we do.
We will come back with more in-depth information about the power-ups and gameplay modifications around Rayman Legends Retold launch on October 1st!
