Ecology and Nature Crisis Update
I received reports that responding to a nature or ecology crisis would spend
your resources but the crisis would return almost immediately, sometimes over
and over. Thank you for flagging it. This update fixes the root causes and makes
your investment in the environment actually stick.
What was going wrong:
- Resolving a crisis did not fix its cause. When you chose a response to a
nature or ecology crisis, the game charged you and applied the effect, but it
never rebalanced the wildlife or biome driving the crisis. The underlying
imbalance remained, so the same crisis re-triggered shortly after, making it
feel like your resources did nothing.
- Some crises slipped through a second resolution path. Crises answered through
multi-choice events were hit hardest: the effects applied, but the biome was
never brought back into balance, so a follow-up crisis fired again soon after.
- A neglected environment could get stuck at rock bottom. If your biosphere
collapsed, it could flatline at zero with no way back, so nature crises never
let up no matter what you did.
- Crises fired far too often. Even a recovering environment faced crises at full
frequency, so there was no visible payoff for cleaning things up.
- You had no way to see progress. Nothing told you whether your ecology was
recovering or whether crises were becoming less likely.
What I fixed:
- Resolving a crisis now heals its cause. Every way of clearing a crisis, single
choice, multi-choice, and dismiss, now rebalances the originating biome and
opens a short calm window, so a crisis you pay to resolve stays resolved
instead of instantly repeating.
- All resolution paths are unified. Every crisis-clearing path now runs through
one shared step, so no crisis type can slip through without its biome being
healed.
- A neglected environment now recovers on its own. Instead of dying permanently
at zero, a neglected biosphere gradually rewilds back toward a natural floor,
giving your ecology a path back.
- Crises ease as your ecology recovers. The healthier your biosphere, the less
often nature crises strike, from full frequency at the floor to roughly half as
often at a healthy biosphere, so environmental investment clearly pays off.
- New at-a-glance indicators. The Overview and Wildlands screens now show a
Nature Crisis Risk readout, how much less often crises hit compared with a
barren sector, plus a recovery-versus-decline trend, so you can see your
progress at a glance.
- Guardrails to keep it fixed. We added automated checks that fail the build if
any future change lets a resolved crisis skip healing its biome, so this class
of bug cannot quietly return.
I've begun taking a stab at the Map. The map is awful, I know.
