Hello, Yolkfolk! 🥚

I'm Chris, aka Algebra. I am one of the developers working on Egging On, and I wanted to tell you a bit more about the core mechanic of our game: The Tip Jump!

As an egg, you're able to roll and jump. However, jumping won’t always be as easy as you might think. The irregular shape of the egg means that you'll have to pay close attention to how you jump. To jump higher, you will have to do it at the right moment, when the pointy end of the egg touches the ground.

Let's take a closer look at how it works!

The greatest height can be reached by jumping from the tip of the egg, while the lowest is reached when the egg is lying on its side. The jump from the bottom is moderately high, although still much lower than from the tip. The transition is smooth so the jump from “almost the tip” will be “almost as high” as from the tip.

To jump higher, making sure to jump from the tip is more important than having a good run-up or jumping from a point closer to the edge. However, a short run up may still be needed to cover a greater distance.

A stationary jump on the side is low enough to allow easy change of the egg's alignment. This can help with aligning jumps with edges. It may also be helpful to hear and use the rhythmic sound of the egg and reposition the camera so that the rolling cycle is more clearly visible.

The Tip Jump is a great tool, but there are places where you have to be careful and choose the strength of your jump to avoid jumping too high or too far.

You might be wondering - how did we come up with such an idea?

In the first prototype of Egging On that was created during the game jam, we discovered that the jumps were varying a bit in height. We realised that it actually occurred naturally because that's when the egg's centre of mass was at the highest position. It made sense, and was fun to play with, so we decided to make this difference more prominent and that's how the Tip Jump was hatched.

🥚

That's all for today! I hope you enjoyed reading about the Tip Jump. We have many more egg-citing things in Egging On to share so stay tuned!
