Hey Solarpunk Community,
Sometimes small surprises emerge from experiments and creative breaks. When we started developing the islands of Solarpunk, we experimented with voxel techniques and terraforming. It looked cool, but for a small team like ours, it was just too ambitious. So, we set the idea aside – but the technology was still there.
Our artist, a big fan of the game Motherload, spent his vacation turning the terraforming tech into the mini-game A Game About Digging A Hole. Maybe it’s just what you need to sweeten the wait for Solarpunk’s release!
How did „A Game About Digging a Hole“ come to be?
Honestly, this wasn’t even planned. Our artist, who works on Solarpunk, had an idea during his vacation. Instead of taking a break, he created this game entirely in his spare time – in just 14 days.
And in case you’re wondering: No, Solarpunk didn’t lose a single day of development time. Everything else, like marketing, is fully handled by the publisher.
Why digging?
The idea actually came during the early development of Solarpunk. Back then, we experimented with voxel-based islands and terraforming. It looked cool, but for a small team like ours, it was just too much. So, we decided to scrap it – but the tech was still there.
Our artist, a big fan of Motherload, thought: “Why not combine the digging mechanic with randomly spawning ores and upgrade options for shovels?” And so, it began. Licensed assets, no long prototyping phases, and a fully functional game emerged in record time.
The Story: A garden. A treasure. What could go wrong?
You see a sign: “House for sale – unbeatable price.” Sounds like a deal, right? Even better, they say there’s a treasure buried in the garden. Jackpot!
You buy the house, grab your “Super Mega Digger 3000 Ultimate 2.0,” and start digging. Your mission? Unearth the treasures and uncover the big secret hidden beneath. Sounds simple? Let’s see.
What do you actually do in the game?
Dig 🪓 > Find treasures 💎 > Sell treasures 💰 > Upgrade your equipment ⚙️ > Dig deeper ⛏️ > Uncover the secret 🗝️
That’s the loop. And that’s exactly what makes the game so entertaining – it’s simple, yet incredibly fun.
