The results from the Thinky Awards will be announced later today, so I thought it would be appropriate to drop this patch now. If you're available at 10am PST / 1pm EST / 6pm UTC today (February 4th), then please tune into the Thinky Games stream to cheer on Gentoo Rescue. It is nominated for Game of the Year, Best Puzzle Design, and Best Challenging Game. Here's a link to the YouTube stream.

In other news, I've been slowly working my way through all the custom levelpacks uploaded to Steam Workshop. It's been really fun, and I've been really impressed with how much creativity the community has been able to squeeze out of their levels. Definitely check them out and/or try your hand at creating your own, if you haven't already!

We're up to 177 Steam reviews with 100% positive rating! Thanks so much for the support! I never imagined the game would be this successful, so it's very likely that this will not be the final patch.

New content

  • New level Buffer replaces Hurdle in Crowdsurf.

Puzzle changes

  • Add wall to Inception below the blue nest to make it easier for players to find the correct first export. I hope this will make premature discovery of importing less accidental.
  • Remove some purposeless walls from Inception.
  • Swap the positions of some post-Replication levels:
    • Jettison with Barrage in Mjolnir and Foreboding
    • Halt with Counter in Liftoff.
    • Duct with Unit in Trapped.

New features

  • Add 20 degree deadzone on each of the four diagonals for gamepad left stick input. This should prevent accidental moves where inputting near the NW diagonal might produce both up and left inputs.
  • Add gameplay settings radial deadzone (usually just called deadzone) and angular deadzone (above).
  • Add support for animal+item combination keywords to be used in hints! Many hints were modified to use these.
  • Overhaul menu UI (backgrounds, text/image buttons, and optional HUD elements like move icons and color wheel). Changes are relatively small as not to disrupt existing players.

Bugfixes

  • Fix rare bug causing items to disappear after reset. This involved both a race condition between an item sinking off the puzzle and another item being removed by other means such as export or mask, as well as a subsequent undo and reset.
  • Fix visual bug where an item would not be destroyed when it should. This could occur when a chain of several mask steals were performed in succession.
  • Fix visual bug where an item would not be destroyed when it should. This could occur on custom levels that went crazy with item flinging.
  • Don't automatically zoom out of all instances of a recursive level when exporting.
  • Blocking rainbow pinwheel shrink/grow animation won't begin until it has already animated down to its tile location.
  • Solver heuristic now considers rocket+magnet combo with a non-plain wall in between them can allow for bouncing off a cracked tile without simultaneous movement.
  • Don't show bind prompts in test mode for puzzles sharing names with those in the main game.
  • Escape quotes in workshop title, author, and description JSON fields.

Misc

  • Make animating colored pinwheel bigger on hub.
  • Disable framerate throttling when game is not focused.
  • Disable lightbulb journal button for levels that do not have any required journal entries.
  • Keep lightbulb yellow in "Required for current level" submenu for levels that require an undiscovered entry.
  • Change "Save and quit" text in pause menu to "Return to menu".
  • Fix "Required for current level" journal entries for a few metapuzzles.
  • Remove loop artifact in hell biome music.
  • Credit Prosephia for Simplified Chinese translation of the Steam page.

Game update17 Aug 20261.2.3 - Tweaks from 1.2, performance improvements, big typo fixesIt's great to see how much love the community continues to show for the game. I see it in so many ways: · your playtime · your discussions, questions, and issue reporting · your content and views on YouTube/Twitch · your custom levelpacks uploaded to Steam Workshop · your reviews and additional recommendations outside of Steam So it's about time that I've returned the favor and released the nex…Game update15 Jun 20261.2.2 - Small UI fixesIt's been great seeing old players return to the game for some more penguin puzzling. Thanks to everyone that has shown support for the 1.2 Anniversary Update and our appearance in the Thinky Direct! Here's the trailer in case you missed it. Usually after a big update there will be a few small follow-ups and this update is no exception. MacOS build is here (which was missing for 1.2.1), and the…Game update8 Jun 20261.2.1 - More puzzle tweaks (Windows/Linux only)Hello! Originally I had plans to include these changes in a bigger patch that will drop once Simplified Chinese translation of all hints and puzzle names is finalized. However I did not want to delay some of these changes (particularly to G and Diplopia since they were introduced in 1.2.0), so I'm pushing it out now to Windows and Linux users. It takes quite a bit more work to get builds ready…
