Builder’s Diary - Part 3

January 2, 1994 – Fuses

Before you start fiddling with cables, you HAVE TO unscrew the fuse. Otherwise, you might take a hit that'll knock you straight on your ass.
Sometimes, if the fuse is already blown, you can take it home – always good to have a spare.
But when you’re doing a fresh install, remember: the first cable goes from the fuse to the switch, and only then to the lamp.
Why? Because that way the client gets a brand-new gadget – a fuse-switch combo. If they want to turn off the light, they gotta go to the fuse box and unscrew it. High-tech system.
Does it work? It does. So don’t complain.

February 4, 1994 – Installing Wall Lamps

Installing a lamp on the wall is easy – but the order matters.
First, install the cables. Only then hang the lamp.
Because if you hang it first – how the hell are you gonna feed the wires in? Through the wall?
Seen it too many times – someone hangs the lamp, then: “Oh crap, forgot the wires” – and it all comes down again.
Then they hang it back up. Then realize it’s upside down. And around we go.
Who’s got time for that kind of nonsense?

April 6, 1994 – Laying Cables in the Wall

According to “proper technique,” cables should go straight – vertically or horizontally.
But under plaster no one sees it anyway, so if you want to save some cable (and sanity), you run it diagonally.
It’s faster, cheaper, and less cable gets wasted.
Just be careful – if the client sees the cables zigzagging, they’ll be like: “Oh no, sir, this has to be redone from scratch.”
Yeah, right – you’ve lost your damn mind, Mr. Client.
If it works, it works. It’s not like your wall has X-ray vision.

May 8, 1994 – Drilling

Now this is where you really gotta watch your back.
Happened to me once – drilled straight into a live wire.
When it blew, it knocked me right off the wall. The drill bit? Toast.
But hey, silver lining – once you drill into a cable like that, the same fuse won’t blow again.
Why? 'Cause it already did.
You learn once – and remember forever.
Or not.

That’s it for now, dear diary.
Enough adventures for one day – off to the next job.
Hopefully no one gets zapped this time. But if someone does – it won’t be me.
