Hello everyone.

I continue covering operations involving single genes in the Gene Lab. In the previous devblog, I talked about absorption - a way to turn an extra gene into a permanent bonus. Today I will cover another operation: gene finalization.Finalization.If absorption is used for genes that are no longer needed on the map, finalization is the opposite: it is applied to genes that the player wants to keep as part of the build.The lab allows the player to perform one final operation on a gene. This is called “finalizing a gene.” After a gene has been finalized, it can no longer be processed further. Of course, the player can still remove it from the Gene Map and move it back into the inventory. However, it can no longer be fully disposed of: finalized genes are not available for absorption.Genes that undergo finalization turn into more specialized versions of themselves. In a sense, they are sharpened for a specific role within the build. There are two variants of this operation:

  • gene stabilization;

  • gene destabilization.

Stabilization.

When stabilized, a gene receives an additional enhancement related to its own archetype. If it is a Chitoregulation gene, it receives a random effect from the full set of effects belonging to that same archetype. The effect also matches the allele tier reached by the original gene.The idea behind stabilization is simple: the player strengthens the direction that was already present in the gene.For example, there is a Chitoregulation gene that increases Attack. This gene has already developed to the fourth allele tier. The player can stabilize it, and it will receive one more effect from the Chitoregulation set at the fourth allele tier. It can even be Attack again.This option is used when the player already understands what the character is built around and wants to reinforce the build’s strong side.Destabilization.Destabilization is the riskier version of finalization. In this case, the gene receives an additional enhancement not from its own archetype, but from another one. The result can be less predictable, since there are always four other archetypes from which a random effect can be selected. However, this procedure opens up more interesting combinations.For example, a physical gene may receive an additional effect related to recovery or psionic abilities. As a result, a single slot on the Gene Map starts fulfilling several roles at once. Destabilization allows the player to mix directions and create unusual combinations of effects. But this comes with risk: the result may be less straightforward than with stabilization.Stabilization strengthens the chosen archetype of the gene.
Destabilization tries to combine effects from different archetypes.Both operations are useful, but they are used in different situations.

The Cost of Finalization.

Finalization should not be a free upgrade. In Irsen, almost any interference with the character’s genetic structure is tied to corruption. The stronger the gene, the more dangerous it is to work with it. Finalizing a weak gene is relatively safe, but finalizing a Prime gene already becomes a serious decision. Such a gene can provide a powerful bonus, but at the same time bring the character closer to new mutations.This is an important part of the game’s overall idea. The player does not simply collect everything that is best. Instead, they constantly choose which risk is justified and which one may already threaten the run. Sometimes it is better to stabilize a strong gene and receive a reliable enhancement. Sometimes it is more beneficial to destabilize it and try to create a rare synergy. And sometimes it is better not to touch anything at all, just to avoid accelerating corruption gain.Why This System Exists.As I mentioned in the previous devblog, the main goal of these operations is to give the player more control over character development.Finalization allows the player to:

  • reinforce an already chosen direction;

  • take a risk for a hybrid effect;

  • trade corruption and mutation risk for power right now.

Finalization is a way to keep a gene on the map, but turn it into a stronger and more final version of itself. The Gene Lab is not only about increasing numbers. It turns random loot into a controllable development system: the player takes what they found during the run and gradually turns it into their own build.
