Hello people of the Unseen!
It’s that time of the month again! But this time, the dive is focused on something brand new… something far away... a new location.
You see, now that Chapter II is finally here, it’s time we shift our focus from the cold depths of the Staff Centre and all its robotic shenanigans, to a darker, more desolate and mysterious part of The Depths…
This place is none other than The Outskirts! The furthest and deepest part of the deep dark depths The Lab resides in.
This portion of The Depths is where Chapter III takes place… so you better get used to its rocky terrain and rough locals.
So… how about we take a look at some things in this new zone?
SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER II AHEAD!
also rocks... those are also ahead... especially in the first area, Crystalline Outskirts.
So, how did we get here?
For those of you who played Chapter II all the way through you may have an idea of how… this… happened.
But, you took quite a tumble at the end of the rails no? How did you survive this?
And that’s another point, how did you even survive falling into the Crack in the Unseen in the first place?
There’s no way you should be alive by now!
Unless… maybe something… or someone saved you… but who?
So many questions! Yet no answers!
For now at least…
Now that we’re here in The Outskirts, many questions are raised.
However, I want to touch on one question in particular…
What was this place’s purpose? Well, it had lots of purposes! Though some of those purposes will make themselves apparent later, one purpose I will highlight is the widespread mining operation that took place here in these cold reaches of The Depths.
Now this mining wasn’t any old traditional or even advanced mining, it was almost fully automatic, and used gargantuan machines known as ISORIGs, the big brothers of the ROOMPIGs.
And now, years later… you will explore the beating heart of this operation… for the Rig Mines await your arrival…
What’s that? There’s a "new" feature coming to the game for that kind of gamer?
That’s right! This feature (that kinda isn't really new) is none other than Steam Achievements!
While quite common in games, achievements are that extra little cherry on top for the completionists out there that want something to put on their profile…
(me.)
Yeah I’ve been planning to add achievements since the Submechanophobia days, so it’s nice that these are finally getting into Depths Unseen!
But anyways, let’s end off with the fun fact shall we?
One about Chapter II!
I relived trauma writing this.
Fun fact:
Did you know that the Sortamatic took NINE HOURS TO CREATE… no I’m not kidding.
Development started on the nice brisk (dunno if that's the right word) morning of the 15th of January… it started normally, I made a room, booted up a tutorial, and got to work!
Little did I know this dev session was going to be the worst one yet…
The cracks started to form when I realised the tutorial was split into four parts… which I didn’t exactly notice when looking up sliding puzzle tutorials…
Things then got worse when I skipped part three thinking “oh it’ll be fiiiine… I don’t need a shuffle system!”
Spoiler alert I needed a shuffle system…
Then it got even worse when I realised I was burning through most of my day… which made me panic a little because I thought only one hour had passed… not four… which then turned into five… then six…
I eventually got the puzzle working! So it was just a case of detecting when it was done and then it was just a case of opening a door! Which went smoothly after all the misery and anguish that came befo- oh… oh wait… no… this is the Sortamatic we’re talking about here… it was just more misery.
But in the end… I got it done… was it worth it? I mean… like… kinda? It’s cool… but also like I kinda hate sliding puzzles...
Yeah this whole thing was a mistake… doesn’t help it was designed practically last minute… extra fun!
But with that, this ends our little look into Chapter III, and what came before it.
This dive was a little shorter, but that’s because development only just started on the 20th, so I kinda didn’t have too much time to get everything together.
But hey ho, I managed to get something juicy in here and thats pretty neat.
What’s also neat is I finally connected the Discord and YouTube links properly! So no more long links or unwanted promotion! You can just click the little icons down below, and you’ll be taken to places with more Depths Unseen content to be seen…
But anyways, that’s it for now.
See you all next month! When I hear there might be some more interesting info shared… 👀
Have fun with Depths Unseen!
