Cross-platform matchmaking: how we’re no-clipping Wanderers across platforms

Hey Wanderers!

With the launch of Escape the Backrooms on Xbox and PlayStation just around the corner (release date to come soon, honest), today we’re opening the lid on how cross-platform matchmaking between console and PC will function, alongside some minor changes to the social system so you can play with your friends – no matter the platform they’re on.

Matchmaking will now use Epic Online Services (EOS) without the need to sign into any extra accounts – including an Epic Account. This change not only allows cross-platform functionality, but also to use lobby codes.  We made this choice as it allows the simplest experience for you, the players, to use and remove any unnecessary barriers to play with your friends.

When a lobby is created – both publicly and privately – a lobby code will be generated. This code is visible to anyone in the lobby, allowing you to share the code with friends to join the game!

For the content creators out there, do not worry! There is a toggle to hide this lobby code automatically, so you won’t have any strange and unwanted entities popping in to say hello.

Using the lobby code system means you don’t need to manage multiple friends lists – or any for that matter! This has the benefit of added privacy, giving you the peace of mind that no skin-stealers have snuck their way into your games.

A little more detail from the development crew here:

"Using EOS allows us to populate and retrieve the list of multiplayer lists easily – as well as connecting people via a peer-to-peer network. This project was built on multiple different APIs, which meant creating custom implementations for various things to allow them to work in harmony.”

Will you be using lobby codes to connect with your pals on console? Let us know in the comments, or over on our Discord and TikTok account.
