In Empyreal, players are able to pick their character’s background after carefully crafting their appearance. This will determine their personality and provide unique dialogue options when talking to Expedition members and build trust with them. Additionally, your background also determines what weapon class and equipment you begin with. However, you are not locked into a specific weapon, equipment set or abilities, as they can be changed at any point throughout the game.
Each background provides a hint to what your character’s interactions and mannerisms will be. Here’s a handy rundown of all of them:
Charming Prankster - Mace and Shield
“You make it through life relying on wits alone, although your playful sense of humour has gotten you into as much trouble as it has gotten you out.”
Excitable Tattletale - Cannon
“You make fleeting friendships through your loose tongue. Other gossips eagerly seek you out, until they realize you are as likely to air their dirty laundry as any other.”
Handsome Devil - Mace and Shield
“You’ve breezed through your young life leaving a plethora of jilted suitors in your wake. Features as striking as yours open many doors of opportunity.”
Inebriated Rambler - Cannon
"You stumble from one bottle to the next, regaling anyone who will listen with grand exaggerations of your so-called glory days. At this point, even you have trouble separating fact from fiction."
Inscrutable Warrior - Mace and Shield
“An enigma wrapped in an obfuscated mystery. It would be imprudent of me to say more…”
Morose Rogue - Glaive
“Sullen and ill-tempered, you suffer no fools. Although you invariably choose your own company over others, that does not mean you enjoy solitude. You’re just generally miserable most of the time…”
Wayfaring Stranger - Glaive
“You enjoy the respect and intrigue you inspire in others and are always careful not to give too much away. As soon as anyone learns too much, it’s time to move on.”
