Controllers Are Go - Public Patch v1.1

All newsPlayers around this dateRead on Steam

This one turned into a bigger update then we expected. Initially we planned to just get controller support out and go from there. It turns out, controller support is not that simple! Contrary to what so many games seem to imply, this ended up being quite the rabbit hole! Nonetheless, we are here now and we do in fact support controllers!

We had to overhaul a lot of systems to get things work, so we just ended up pushing through more items to do a more holistic cleanup of the game systems.

There is more work to be done, but we're pushing this out to help anybody playing the game to have a more consistent experience.

Updates:

  • Total overhaul of controllers implemented. Xbox Gamepad controller support added. All systems now support controller interactions. We did implement playstation controller support, however the lack of driver support on windows for it caused a lot of conflicts with the gamepad and keyboard interactions even when the playstation controller wasn't plugged in so we have taken it out for now.
  • Control scheme overhauled. No more janky aiming reticule, now controls work in a more conventional twin stick third person view.
  • Menu overhauls to add controller support.
  • Switched to completed new input system, allowing for broader and more consistent support of input devices and control schemes.
  • Key rebinding added.
  • Settings menu added with graphics controls, controller tweaking, key rebinding and more.
  • Enemy AI overhauled to make their behaviour and movement more consistent.
  • Enemy rendering fully overhauled to optimise for hundreds of zombies on screen. They run much lighter now which means framerates have gone up 3 - 6x.
  • Enemy damage interactions tweaked to make getting surrounded less punishing.
  • Melee tweaked to make more consistent and workable.
  • Overhauled how bullet and other systems spawn to make them lighter on system resources.
  • Zombies now have a 10% chance to spawn gold on death, making the game economy less punishing.
  • Sound mix cleaned up to improve the sonic consistently across the game and make it sound a bit better.
  • Gameplay UI now includes controls! Sorry about that!
  • Damage numbers tweaked to improve the experience a bit more.
  • Wave spawning updated to improve consistency and ramp up steadily rather then getting a massive pile on thirty seconds into the game.
  • Environments tweaked to improve visuals and optimise lighting.
  • Overhauled collision systems to improve responsiveness and to lighten compute resources.
  • Zombie dismemberment now more consistent and less of a drain on resources.
  • Fixed a number of bugs in gameplay and rendering.

There's more, but we hope this makes the game more playable and an improved experience!
