Major Release: Snapping V2 + FBX Import + WindowsMR Support

I’m really excited to announce this release, we’ve spent the last few weeks improving our snapping system and it’s the biggest improvement since we added Poly.

Snap to Normal & Preview Snap Location

Before, it was unclear where an object would snap to, and each object only had one plane that other objects could be snapped to. See example below.

With snapping to the normal, you can easily snap objects to larger objects and quickly build rooms/scenes. And it just feels right. In the example below, we can easily snap a bookshelf to a wall that’s part of the ‘bedroom’ object.

Snap to any side of an Object

Before it was only possible to snap to a single side of any object (the origin plane). Objects now have bounding boxes and you can snap to any side of the bounding box.

Rename Projects

You can now rename projects by opening Settings and pressing ‘rename’. The name you choose will show up on the homescreen, and in windows explorer.

Toggle Snapping On/Off

Sometimes, you really don’t want objects to snap together. Like in the example below, if you want to place tools loosely into a tool case. Snapping is ON by default and can be toggled OFF by HOLDING down the A button.

FBX Import

You’ve been requesting FBX import since we first released Sketchbox, and it’s finally here! We’ve tested it with FBX files generated by all the major 3D desktop tools, and lots more that we found on Sketchfab.

If you find an FBX file that doesn’t import properly, please email us.

Windows MR Support

Sketchbox now supports all Windows MR headsets via the SteamVR adapter.

Project Renaming

The new project renaming feature makes it easier to keep all your projects organized.

Coming Soon: Sketchfab Integration

Last week Sketchfab announced their Download API. We’ve been working with them to make their library of over 100,000 models instantly accessible in Sketchbox. We’re super excited about this but it isn’t quite ready for release.

Other Improvements

* After importing a model or image, we now automatically switch to the select tool so you can position it
* When switching between scene viewpoints you’re now more likely to be looking in the intended direction
* FBX export look better when imported into Unity
* You can now search across all models on Google poly (high poly and low poly). High poly models will take longer to download. 🔺
* Menu disappears during select
* Poly color will work in FBX exports
* Added numbers and dash symbol to keyboard 🔢
* Autosave indicator (all of your latest changes are always saved)
* Fixed a bug where FBX exports were inside out in Unity 🐛
* Fixed a bug that happened when Poly models failed to download 🐛
* Other, minor bug fixes 🐛

Community13 Feb 2019Massive Release: Cross Platform MultiplayerThis is by far the biggest and most exciting Sketchbox release ever. We spent the last 6 months building real-time collaboration for Sketchbox, which lets up to 16 people, on any VR headset, design together with built in VOIP. Many of our beta testers have replaced in person meetings, with Sketchbox meeting. You can now act out interactions in VR, without writing any code, using Wizard Mode. We…Game update31 Jul 2018Release: Text & Copy Between ScenesText Input Definitely our most requested feature, you can now add text to any scene. Text will behave exactly like any other object, which means it can be snapped, resized and grouped. Comfort Mode For our users that are susceptible to motion sickness, we've added comfort mode, which applies an FOV limiting effect when moving around the scene, much like in Google Earth. It is off by default and…Community25 May 2018Release: Scale for ModelsOver the last two weeks we focused on scale. And I’m excited to announce that you can now import models with the correct scale and see the dimensions of a model. Import Models with Scale When importing a model into Sketchbox (GLTF, OBJ or FBX) Sketchbox will read the model file, and import the model with whatever units were in the file (mm, cm, m, km, in or ft). Using ‘Model Settings’ you can c…
