Hello everyone, with the launch of my first commercial game around the corner, I wanted to share something special with you. The first game I ever made...
I'll also be sharing some important news regarding Mac support.
My Very First Game
In 2015 I took a course about modding Minecraft, this was the first time I had ever coded anything or created pixel art. Needless to say I was immediately hooked, so I turned to YouTube with the intent of making my own games. I found some tutorials and got to work, this is the result of those efforts, my very first game EVER.
I believe the main tutorial for the game was one by Tom Francis and some of the art assets were from a tutorial by Heartbeast. The engine I used was GameMaker 1.4 and I used Pyxel edit for the art. The project is also literally called "First Game".
It's hard to believe how far I've come since that game, as of today I've participated in 24+ game jams and to think I'm launching my first commercial title in less than two weeks is crazy. My 15 year old self wouldn't believe it.
I want to say thank you to all the people who have wishlisted and supported Return over the last two and a half years, I couldn't do it without you.
Mac Support News
Next up is Mac support news, I wanted to be 100% transparent about this so there are no misunderstandings. At this point in time there is no way for me to have Mac support available in time for the May 29th launch.
Unfortunately the way GameMaker handles Mac exports is different from other game engines. GameMaker requires that I have a physical Mac to build and test the game on. The only Mac I have access to at the moment is 11 years old and can't run the game at more than 20 FPS. While I can still build the game using the Mac I can not properly test it and I'm not comfortable shipping a build that I haven't thoroughly tested my self.
That being said, once the game has launched and I can actually afford to purchase a new Mac, I plan on adding full Mac support. I apologize for any Mac users who were excited to play the game at launch, but I want to make sure you have a smooth experience.
