Due to minor variations in trees, some apple trees grow larger (or smaller) apples than others. For example, the largest apple on record weighed around 4lbs and was grown in a normal sized apple tree in Japan. One could only assume that you could grow apple trees specifically for creating larger and larger apples similar to the way that we grow trees with the goal of producing tastier and better looking apples for marketing purposes. Though apparently over time this has resulted in a decrease in natural nutrients found in the apples. This would also apply to similar fruit trees.
