It’s time for Dev Diary #3 for the upcoming Risk of Rain 2 DLC: Hallowed Concepts.
In our third Dev Diary, guest host and lead designer Bruno Fontanetti takes us through the Trials of N'kuhana. Great power can be uncovered in Hallowed Concepts, but at a high cost. The Trials of N'kuhana take the Survivors into pocket realms, each with their own unique objectives and rewards.
Before we go any further, the fine print of Bruno’s hosting contract does stipulate that N’kuhana be appeased with an offering: wishlist Hallowed Concepts now, or Bruno will be subjected to the trials himself.
Do it for Bruno.
We now know that in Hallowed Concepts, big power comes at a big price. Hexes for hallowed items, pages for pain, and Trials that take this idea into entirely new pocket realms woven directly into your run, each with their own unique objectives and rewards.
Tucked away in different stages, the followers of N’Kuhana hang their gongs where Her Gaze lingers. By finding one, you’ll have proven yourself worthy of taking on their trial. All that’s left… is to ring it.
Trials come in three haunted flavors: Winnowings of Survival, Predation, and Mortality. Simply put, endure the pain, hunt down your prey, or race for your very soul.
In the Winnowing of Predation you may enter the Trial of Broken Glass, where you’ll have to smash enough lanterns to satisfy N’Kuhana. You may also find the Trial of Infernal Greed, where you’ll need to turn a fortune before time runs out.
Or if you prefer violence, the Winnowing of Survival may find you.
In the Trial of the Abyss, the fog demands to be Fed.
If you think you have enough time saved to beat another trial, all you have to do is ring the gong in the reward area to chain trials back to back… to back.
And since the timer is shared between all Trials… well, good luck.
For your efforts, you’ll also earn the right to one page of the N’tormat. Dark Alchemy, Warp Gates, Fanatic Summons, an army of friendly Lynx. Trials are a reliable way to grow your dark library and collect more power.
Which brings us to the big one. Remember that ‘boss rush trial’ we mentioned?
Here it is: the Soulbound Threshold
Waves of enemies and bosses alike stand between you and survival. Slay them all in three minutes, and you may return to your run with the power you’ve collected thus far.
